Peter
Ba’al. Seriously laddy? She was better prepared and dinna cheat with her computerized teleprompters? I am strenuous in my dissent when I say Trump should demand she come up with her own answers in a debate. He is supposed to be debating HER and not her and a room full of debate and policy experts, visibly prompting her when she glances down right or left. Maybe Donald Trump should demand any help she gets be standing behind her on the podium. There will be Trump standing at his lectern with his “cat who drank the milk smile” and there will be Hillary with about 55 people standing behind her like Greek Chorus, shouting into her ear. How long would she continue to be a viable candidate when the audience and all of America sees she is cheating, and that it takes a village of wonks to outdebate Mr. Trump? Mr. Trump, demand no devices to allow cheating at the next debate. Refuse to step onto the stage one day before the event . . . and we will see how great a debater and future President she would be. Peter, Apropos, I've read some people claim that Trump was using this first debate (at least in part) to size up Clinton--that is, when she is physically on the stage with him. This is different than seeing her debate others or seeing her in speeches or interviews. During the debate, you could see him studying her--especially her face--intently at times. They said he was detecting her tells like a first-class poker player would. And that he is going to use this savvy in the next debates where he will make agility part of the game and eat her alive. I don't know if this is true, but he has owned and worked with casinos for a good part of his professional life. So it makes perfect sense he would know how to do that and deploy it as a tactic. Michael You may be rationalizing this. It could also be the case that The Donald was ill prepared and he did not take this debate seriously. Given his cavalier attitude, this is certainly a possibility. Could it be that The Donald holds Her Hillaryship in utter contempt? A good gamer should not underestimate his/her opponent. Whether one likes the way Hillary thinks or not, it should be noted that she is a 25 year Washington pro.

I don't think anything like that. Not at all. I think it possible that Trump was studying Clinton in addition to giving a masterful debate. Not as an excuse for anything. Michael I am -suggesting- that Trump as ill prepared, and he was ill prepared because of an arrogance that caused him to underestimate what the Hillary could do. Trump does not have rational humility (by which I mean an objective assessment of his own talent and wit). He is what the Russians call nyekoolohrnia, that is a barbarian. Which is why I am voting for him btw. I want to put the bull in the china shop.

Bob, Hogwash... You know very little about pacing and leading. I can tell. And that's just one technique Trump was using during the debate. (I'll explain it if you like, but in the other thread--the Trump thread. This one is for humor. ) Donald Trump is one of the most disciplined persuaders I have ever seen. He pulled his punches. She even set him up perfectly here and there, and he didn't knock it out of the park. He backed off from his normal power-punching tactics and took some hits. Kind of similar to what Romney did, and which cost him the election. Trump's got to really step it up next time. J
BaalChatzaf
Why the Donald even partook in this rhetorical wrestling match eludes me. This verbal duels indicate nada about how a candidate thinks or what we will do. These debates are such that if we ever had a totally super brilliant candidate (which Trump is not) who stutters, he would not have a chance. That really is annoying. The sound crew has it set up to enhance the higher frequencies. Were they aware of this tendency/trait of his to sniff, and decided to crank it up and make it into more than it is? I wouldn't doubt it. There was even one point where Hillary was talking, and it seemed to me that the sound crew was pushing Trump's mic just short of the point of feedback squeal to try to pick up his breathing or normal swallowing or lip sounds. This reminds me of one of the very first screenwriting lessons I ever learned. I started writing for movies on the job in Brazil. (Long story and I did not continue the profession.) The director, Fauzi Mansur, showed me what bad dialog looks like. There was a scene where a guy got shot. Then a pretty lady runs up to help him and asks, "Did you get shot?" He said this was bad writing because you just saw it. If you see something, then somebody says it right after you just saw it, this assumes the viewer is stupid. Viewers tend to not like this. Michael Stuart Kelly
Trump's kids go around killing dinosaurs! Talk about gross privilege! That's shameful! Seriously, you have to see this to believe it. LOL... btw - On a persuasion level, notice how the tone of Dice's voice lulls the mind of the folks he interviews into a kind of trance where they give a conditioned response. This Pavlovian lullaby allows them to vest and posture themselves with moral superiority without thinking. Literally without any rational thought whatsoever. Ding!!! Off they go: The white rich man is evil, and so are his kids, especially when they brutally kill dinosaurs for sport. Besides, don't they know the dinosaur is an endangered species?...
