Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon-turned-conservative-activis­t, said Obamacare is the "worst thing" to happen to America since slavery, because "it is making all of us subservient to the government."

If you agree that this is the case, whether it is intentional or unintended on the part of the president, you must be prepared to do something about it. Or at least figure out what you are going to tell your grandchildren when they are old enough and find themselves living in this socialist nightmare in the near future.

We know the antidote. The Atlas Society is encouraging the student activists being recruited by the studentsforliberty.org and the Young Americans For Liberty (YALiberty.org) to read Ayn Rand's works. You might conclude that therefore you don't have to do anything and that we will win the day without your donations to help these organizations.

That brings to mind the statement by Hank Rearden after his court appearance. You know the one. To paraphrase. I only regret that in the process of saving my own neck I am obliged to save yours as well!

You know that I think the efforts of these two organizations of student activists are crucial and essential. Admittedly the efforts of so many others contribute to the cause as well. It is a battle of ideas so surely you know there exist many pro free market think tanks and foundations and publications in the movement. And they do all count too.

But it is now necessary to ignite and enlighten the next generation all over the country and the world and that is what SFL and YAL are doing. In time the words of Victor Hugo that "no armies can stop an idea whose time has come" will have true meaning when there are tens, then hundreds and then billions of young people whose awareness will be awakened.

As we used to say: Become aware of Objectivism!

It is happening. We live in the time of its creation in the mind of one person, Ayn Rand, and its spread to the minds of generations to come.

So far we have among the horrors which have occurred in history:

* the Black Plague

* socialized medicine

* human slavery

I can suggest a few more: The Dark Ages; Totalitarian Dictatorship; Diseases; Religions; Public Education; Political Parties; Communism; Statism; Fiat Currencies; Faith; Tribalism; The Inquisition; Interventionism; Just Knowing; Modern Art; Hip Hop; Censorship; The French Revolution; Alcohol; Democracy; Initiation of Force; Nuclear Energy; Collision with Asteroids.

Given that our current situation is fraught with danger I should add: Central Banks, Ignorance, Economic Collapse, Loss of world reserve currency status in addition to explosion of national and worldwide debt and socialized medicine. Did I mention socialized medicine?

So what difference does it make if there were worse things than slavery. At this moment we face loss of individual freedom as never before. There I did it again. Certainly there were many less free societies in history which went on to become even less free. Life under the Czar in Russia was worsened by the Bolshevik Revolution for example. But never were individuals as free in history than they were in AMerica for over two hundred years although the case could be made that they began to lose freedom by degrees right from the start. The Alien and Sedition Acts were passed in 1798 barely a dozen years after the country was founded. Despite the declaration that all men were created equal, women were not included and their rights were not recognized in addition to the plight of those enslaved at the time of the creation of the country who continued to live in slavery even beyond the Civil War which purported to have set them free.

But we are on the verge of loss of freedom for everyone who will be subjected to the Affordable Care Act in one way or another. Typically some will benefit as is always the case when some are sacrificed for the benefit of others.

I am not familiar with this gentleman, Dr. Ben Carson, and wish him well in his endeavors. I would not quibble with his wording, his point is quite clear.

I always knew that beneath your overriding anxieties for the state of the Union there was a sense of proportion.

To conflate the various evils that have beset civilization into a single channel such as this issue, seems to me disproportionate.

You already have a limited form of medicare, and expanding it will not destroy your great nation. Nothing can do that except maybe, if I may quote Roosevelt, "fear itself."

Perhaps I have not made myself clear. I do not fear that our great nation will be destroyed by the implementation of the misnamed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Rather that it is a further step in transforming the nation into a totalitarian dictatorship.

While the PPACA was being heard by the SCOTUS (Supreme Court) one aspect had to do with the compelling of an individual to purchase a product against his or her will. This was a power not among the enumerated powers and the concern was that it would set a precedent which might lead to further compulsions with no limit or end in sight. It became obscured by other matters and finally the tie was broken when the Chief Justice declared that what had been labelled a penalty for refusal to purchase the "insurance" was not a penalty but was a "tax" which the Congress had the power to impose.

Never mind that the Constitution also holds that "involuntary servitude" was forever abolished when slavery was ended.

So we are left with the concern that if the government can legitimately do this what is to stop it from doing that. The precedent has been set.

If the national interest warrants it laws may be passed to assure that there will be a sufficient number of citizens becoming street sweepers or anything else by giving mandatory aptitude tests to youngsters and then having the decision of a career which often causes so much soul searching and indecision settled by decree.

Hannah Arendt wrote a book entitled The Origins Of Totalitarianism which comes to mind in this regard. I read it a long time ago and recall that it compared the totalitarian states of Nazi Germany with Soviet Russia. Their was a great deal said about the surveillance involved with a network of civil servants or party members who reported up from the apartment house to the block to the neighborhood and so on to the central authority.

Discussions of politics or philosophy were confined to bathrooms with the toilet being flushed to obscure the conversation.

Such countries have existed and people in them did not lead what we would consider a normal life such as we know in America. The priorities of the tribe or the nation took precedence over the decisions of the individual. The standard of living was reduced as a result of the loss of freedom and loss of property rights of the individual once everything became owned by the State.

It is the alternative of Individualism versus Collectivism which is being played out in our reality and the Progressives are not advocates of Individualism but have been spreading their ideology throughout the public school system as well as the colleges and universities not to mention the media and the arts for over a century.

Once they are satisfied America would still exist despite repeated bankruptcy, failed paper currencies and the gloom and grayness characteristic of dictatorships. The sun would still shine and there would be songs and celebration of the accomplishment of the elimination of the gap between rich and poor once everyone is equally poor.

I do not fear destruction of the nation rather complete loss of individual freedom and unlimited government. Liberty and taxation are incompatible. Keep in mind that Federal taxation of income did not exist and was forbidden under Article 1 Section 9 during the Nineteenth Century until the Sixteenth Amendment was passed into law in 1913. The Progressives have other priorities than the Blessings of Liberty for some individuals. Not enough people understand what Ayn Rand has enunciated that Man is not a sacrificial animal.

There is no easier way to make people slaves to the government than to appeal to their sense of entitlement by promising them the government will make someone else pay their bills.

Unions poised to win delay of ObamaCare tax in budget deal

Labor unions are poised to score the delay of an ObamaCare tax in the bipartisan budget deal emerging in the Senate.

The bargain under negotiation would make small adjustments to the healthcare law, including delaying the law's reinsurance fee for one year. The three-year tax is meant to generate revenue that will stabilize premiums on the individual market as sick patients enter the risk pool.

The tax applies to all group health plans, but unions argue it will raise their healthcare costs while providing them no benefit.

The reinsurance tax figured prominently in discussions at a recent AFL-CIO convention, where workers passed a resolution demanding changes to ObamaCare.

The White House recently denied labor's top priority on ObamaCare, ruling that union health plans are not eligible for the new subsidies because they are already helped by the tax code.

Democrats could be pushing to delay the reinsurance fee for one year as an olive branch after that apparent slight, though it could also create trouble for insurers on the marketplaces.

The possible Senate deal would raise the nation's debt ceiling until mid-February, immediately reopen the government and provide funding until Jan. 15.

It remains to be seen if House Republicans will accept a package that does little to thwart ObamaCare.

The emerging Senate deal defies several expectations when it comes to the healthcare law.


It does nothing to delay or end a new tax on medical devices, for example — a move that appeared to be gaining momentum earlier in the week.

The 2.3 percent tax, which has opposition in both parties, is expected to generate about $30 billion in revenue for ObamaCare over the next 10 years.

Supporters say the fee is fair because the device industry will benefit from a wider customer base under the healthcare law.

But device makers say their tax will cut jobs and stymie innovation, and this argument has gained traction on Capitol Hill.

A bill to repeal the device tax has more than 260 co-sponsors in the House, and 30 Democratic senators opposed the fee alongside their GOP colleagues in a symbolic vote earlier this year.

Democrats are considering including a provision in the emerging deal to require income verification for people receiving federal discounts on healthcare coverage.

But a Democratic aide characterized that reform as a "nothing-burger" because it would only enforce existing law.

This is a fake crisis. If the fake deadline is averted the politicians will lie by claiming that they "saved" us from the fake crisis. If the fake deadline passes, you'll see that the world does not come to an end and that this was just another fake crisis.
