Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is a blueprint for the destruction of all the "welfare states" from Scandinavia to India to Latin America in order to "sweep the board clean" for unbridled laissez-faire capitalism. That much is openly admitted by her admirers who number in the millions.

Anyone who understands the basics of Marxism-Leninism understands that these arch-enemies of peace and progress control the mainstream media. The mainstream media denigrates them as Tea Party fringe elements, marginalized even within the Republican Party for being atheists. However, this smokescreen only masks their deep influence and abiding control of the ideology of imperialism. Their immediate goal is to go on "strike" refusing to direct their global enterprises and thereby bring about the collapse of all so-called "welfare states." To that end, they have stockpiled food, tools, guns and other weapons in order to survive the chaos that they will bring about by shutting down all electrical power, all coal mines and oil wells, and all other industrial production in acts of sabotage and destruction of worldwide scale unimagined in human history. Reactionary theoretician William F. Buckley, Jr., called it "immanetizing the eschaton" referring to the prophesies of the Christian Bible about the end of the world.

Everyone knows that capitalists pursue profits. Yet, as production movies, Parts 1 and 2 of Atlas Shrugged have lost tens of millions of dollars. Why would supposedly "rational" businessmen dedicated to "the virtue of selfishness" pour their own money into a movie that no one wants to see? First, it amuses them. They have the wherewithal and do not care that the money could be better invested in businesses that at least meet a visible public need. Second, and more to the point, it galvanizes the troops, and lets their followers from top to bottomknow that the timeline is engaged and playing out. In Part I, the world's transportation systems were cartelized and then destroyed, along with major oil reserves and copper mines. In Part II, a secret source of limitless energy was revealed and then taken from the government. Part III will be released in the summer of 2014. The producers promise that it will be even "closer to the book" which depicts the collapse of civilization. At the end of the book, the capitalist ruling class faces a bleak, desolate landscape totally devoid of workers, poor people, and government officials. They call this a new beginning; their hero, John Galt, raises is arm and inscribes a dollar sign in the air over the destruction.

Objectivists meet privately and in secret, arranging their meetings via open codes and special phrasings on their handful of interrelated websites and blogs. While hairsplitting ideological differences on matters of obscurantist epistemology and metaphysics, all of them are members of the same coterie of opinion-makers. This cabal of Objectivists picks political candidates, sometimes supporting Democrats, though most often behind Republicans. Headquartered in the Ayn Rand Institute and the Atlas Society, they are the intellectual engines behind powerful front organizations such as the Cato Institute, the Hoover Institute, and Auburn University, and George Mason University.

I recall reading somewhere that Alan Greenspan was really on a mission the dismantle the USA economy much in the same manner Francisco D'Anconia trashed his copper mines.

That there really was an Objectivist conspiracy to wreck the country while the Objectivist elite (and friends) went hiding in some Galt's Gulch somewhere, to later emerge with a takeover the world plan that was already drawn up.

This was on a fringe Christian conspriracy-theory site (there was lots of talk about Anton Levay too), but it's been years, so I don't remember the name.

MSK, actually, yes, this conspiracy theory was brought to me about 1981 by a guy I worked with. I do not know what his politics were, specifically, but he said that Ayn Rand had been the mistress of Leonard Read and then of other capitalists and that Atlas was their plan to take over the world.

I've speculated here on OL, if I recall correctly, that Greenspan's self-aware role might have been to accelerate history a la Francisco or Galt & co. by his Federal Reserve policies, but concluded it was only coincidental as he was only a go-along-to-get-along politician and bad economist suffused with Keynesianism. If I didn't say it this way or all this way before I'm saying it now.

Here's the gist of of the purported Atlas Shrugged world domination conspiracy. It's worse than you think.

And by the way, the next time someone tells you that Ayn Rand is embraced by the radical right, and is the darling of the crypto-fascists and neo-Nazis, show them what those people really think about her.

This gem of paranoia has been described, with sort of a scholarly incredulity, in two books by Michael Barkin (Professor of Political Science, Syracuse University), Religion and the Racist Right: Origins of the Christian Identity Movement (rev.ed., 1997, Univ. of North Carolina Press) and more recently, A Culture of Conspiracy: Apocalyptic Visions in Contemporary America (2003, University of California Press).

I should make clear that Professor Barkin is not an adherent to these beliefs, nor is he implying that Ayn Rand was admired by the people that he is describing - quite the contrary, as you will see.

It seems that the extreme rightist "Christian Identity" (i.e., neo-Nazi) movement discovered Atlas Shrugged and, not surprisingly, hated it. The anonymous author (who Barkin surmises is probably Kerry Noble) claimed to have discovered something that normally functioning minds had not, and revealed his discovery in a pamphlet with the catchy title, Witchcraft and the Illuminati. Here's just a taste, as summarized by Barkin (1997, p. 193):

"Witchcraft and the Illuminati can scarcely contain its excitement about all this secret knowledge.....They know because they possess the key that allows them to unveil the true meaning of the encoded text of Illuminati plans, which turns out to be Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged. Much of the rest of the CSA volume purports to be a decoding of the sinister plans allegedly contained in Rand's best seller."

There is an addition to this fantasy,: in his later book (2003), Professor Barkin adds (pp. 30-31) that Witchcraft and the Illuminati was "inspired" by another Identity devotee (John Todd, the speaker on some of the bizarre videos posted on YouTube), who had discovered that the movie, Three Days of The Condor, "contained a doubly encoded message.... the book on which (Robert) Redford was working as a CIA analyst early in the film was Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged, itself an encoded conspiratorial work....Rand had been commissioned to write the novel by [her lover!] 'Philip [sic] Rothschild,' allegedly the leader of the Illuminati." And "[w]ithin the book is a step-by-step plan to take over the world by taking over the United States."

But, nobody believed these fantasies, right? Wrong. Professor Barkin goes on to describe that the "bizarre claims about Rand's novel had a deep influence not only in fundamentalist churches, but in the Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord [CSA], a heavily armed commune in the Ozarks affiliated with the anti-Semitic and millenialist Christian Identity movement....Indeed, Noble attributes CSA's program of arming and military training to the fears...The community dissolved shortly after a raid by federal law-enforcement authorities in 1985."

As a result of this armed confrontation with the Feds, Kerry Noble spent some time as a "guest" of the federal prison system, during which he had a change of mind, and later wrote an “expose,” Tabernacle of Hate: Why They Bombed Oklahoma City(1998).

On the internet, in YouTube, one can still find several videos, crudely done, disorganized, and bordering on incoherence, from some who still hold these views. Simply search on “Witchcraft and the Illuminati,” in Google., and they pop up.

And you thought only the Leftists (excepting, of course, the National Review-Buckleyite devotees!) hated Rand?

Three Days of the Condor (originally Six Days as a book) is an excellent conspiracy movie.

Yes, capitalists are a specific type of people who pursue profits. A communist is someone who works hard and wants nothing in return... oh wait.

This false distinction of capitalists as some sort of subcategory of human beings as well as the mislabeling of parts of human nature as products of a capitalist system has not only created reasons for people to hate such a system, but also reasons for people to overlook these aspects of humanity when considering alternative social systems.

I think it is actually quite common for people to think that humans have changed significantly since, say, the Holocaust. Of course human nature has not changed to any noticeable degree since the Romans would watch people slaughtered for entertainment, or since they would set cats on fire in England as a form of comedy.

Capitalism is an obvious choice for anyone who can imagine the potential, good and bad, of humans; so that must be what needs communicating the most.

and then there's the phenomenon of a communist country, China, (at least still run by the Communist Party), becoming ragingly capitalist in most other respects. That's a development which should set Mao revolving in his grave. And Ayn Rand, too.

And most other political commentators of any persuasion. I doubt if anyone thought that would happen after Mao's death - and that the new capitalistic system would be overseen by the Communist Party functionaries. So much for all their years of incessant anticapitalist propaganda, accompanied with rhapsodic extollations of the virtues of the communist economic system.
