Hmmm. Other than sort of calling me a dumbshit and prejudiced, do you still think I might have an argument?

David,

Heh.

Nobody called you a dipshit.

But look at it. I wasn't the one who started slinging "dipshit" around to categorize the intellectual "factor" adhered to by those who think differently. That term is yours. It just doesn't sound as funny or clever coming the other way, does it?

And "prejudice" is a correct way to characterize comments that put down others (you know, those who disagree, thus harbor a "dipshit factor" in their intellect) without looking at what they are saying--which is what you were doing. I'm not trying to be contrary qua contrary, but throwing the spotlight on this at least encouraged you to look. You've got a great mind, so I was interested in your ideas, not your snark.

I believe you are one of the good guys, so this is a tempest in a teapot. I just get ornery at times because I do not march to the drummer where I get pleasure from looking down on large groups of humans I believe are my intellectual inferiors (thinking about them as fundamentalist backwater hillbillies or wacko conspiracy freaks or dipshits) and commenting about it as my main substance.

I march to a different drummer.

>If anybody cares, the reason I take issue with the Beck premise is because I think it downgrades the severe, exceptional nature of an the actual Nazi regime of Hitler's Germany. That exceptional nature has many elements to it, including what Carl Jung considered the contorted mythology of a collective Aryian unconscious as related to Hitler, but not, for instance, Mussolini. This is but one example, but to arm-chair and other students of Jung, this is a pretty important example. And there are many, many others. Another exceptional quality is, as pretty much everybody knows, the outcome of World War I and its impact on the German economy. Another is the fact that three Jews (Einstein, Freud, and Lenin) had pretty much turned the world on its head in the generation preceding the Nazi rise to power.

The list can go and on. Thus my skepticism about the title of the post.

Now you're talking. This is the good stuff. Definitely anti-dipshit material.

I'm not so sure about going whole hog with Jung, but I do agree that the core mythological storyline was a part of Nazism and that made it far more dangerous than Mussolini's fascism. Here's a comment from a few months ago where I was comparing core myths on a Jungian level to epistemological morphic resonance.

In other words, in large crowds, I believe these myths do not just reflect the psyche, they also help shape it. It's only a hypothesis, but one that I believe merits some serious mulling. Maybe not biologically, but definitely culturally.

I'm beginning to believe that THE STORY is some kind of epistemological morphic field that gives shape to the mind to filter out parts of reality. I certainly see something akin to morphic resonance when crowds start getting lathered up and the same mis-attributions keep being repeated in face of situations where they are the contrary.

I have seen really good people do really stupid things--and evil things--in crowds. Do you think Hitler didn't know how to manipulate such a field? I say he did. It started with THE STORY. In his case, a strong component of THE STORY was Ayrians once ruled the world, but lost power because they started breeding with lesser humans and are now being kept servile so they don't discover their true strength and take their rightful place once again. Look what happened from within that morphic field (if such be a morphic field--I'm just calling it that right now to be a smart-ass  ).

In short, I agree with you that many Nazi-like surges that are happening all around the world right now are not as rich in roots as Hitler's Nazism was, but I do see a distinct possibility of them growing such roots. The Internet here will be both a blessing and a plague.

We, on the good-guy side, are going to have to tell better stories--myth-like stories--to explain existence. (Rand made a hell of a good start.) Otherwise, the stories that once triggered large numbers to move because of economic hardships will come around again. They will fill the vacuum during times of stress simply because nothing else is there.

Large groups of suffering people always want to feel special, they always want to know why they are suffering and who will destroy their enemy, and they always want to go to a promised land. That's been mankind's history and I suspect it will continue to be for a long, long time to come.

"the stories that once triggered large numbers to move because of economic hardships will come around again. They will fill the vacuum during times of stress simply because nothing else is there.

Large groups of suffering people always want to feel special,"

The culture is changing. The mystical is becoming more and more popular again. Hard science fiction is becoming harder and harder to find. Uplifting positive examples of an improving future are seldom seen. Except for electronics and Internet innovators do young people know of any inventors or great scientists in the present generation?

Economic collapse will indeed open a void for those who will promise quick fixes. A new or retread mythology for the susceptible will arise. Interesting times indeed.

MSK:

You are right that this is a tempest in a teapot to some extent, but I do feel I need to clarify: the "Dumbshit Factor" ** I referred to in post 12 above applies to would-be Nazis, not anybody on this site and certainly not Glen Beck. In other words, that Factor is very likely to go up in the next 5 years, but the question on the table, so to speak, is whether that Factor will lead to a Nazi regime.

Now, I assume your orneriness related to a misreading of my post, and the assumption that I was referring to anybody around here in that fashion. With the exception of occasional lapses into satire with our Canadian Contingent (and Phil) in these halls, I would like to think my body of work around here suggests that is not my way of dealing with issues. Hopefully, you have simply and literally misread me.

On the other hand, if calling would-be Nazis dumbshits is verboten, then we have some structural issues to contend with, because such people are indeed part of the Dumbshit Factor in this world, and I would think stating the obvious about this should be no cause for umbrage...

** You have stated that I used the term "dipshit," but I never referred to anybody that way, not even our short-haired hippie friends in Greece and Cyprus. Although it is possible for a dumbshit to also be a dipshit, I believe the distinction between these two fine insults should be preserved, as the former would seem to relate mainly to a lack of brain power, and the latter would seem to relate more to general behavior and character...

[by the way, I am a big fan of Ken Wilber, could not agree with you more about our need for new and better myths, and think you have a very keen insight about how that need relates to Rand's novels. I want to give that further thought, as it also relates (you may recall) to our Hero's Journey discussion a few months back as well. ]

The popularity of Rand's novels and Star Trek in my youth definitely relates to the need for new and better myths. The popularity of various super hero movies continues at the box office. At the same time our Marxist saturated media and our Fascist wannabe government attempts to destroy anything resembling real life heroes of nearly every kind at every turn. The heroes put forward by our government educational system are heroes carefully crafted to create and sustain voter block victim groups. Real life heroes not fitting the victim voter block narratives are to be destroyed and history altered or neglected in order to maintain that narrative.

If nothing else Beck has been very good at documenting the success the Progressives have enjoyed in destroying and rewriting history to serve their goals. Stripping us of real life heroes supporting freedom/individualism is very important to collectivist rulers and those engaged in central planning schemes.

Hmm, maybe where there is lot's of smoke, there may be the embers of a conflagration...

Americans do not want to hear this, either.

Well, you may not be interested in evil, but evil may be interested in you.

Listen up. This could be important.

The Washington Post just told us that a dictatorial strongman has risen to power in Hungary, a man named Viktor Orban. In a two-hour parliamentary session, Orban forced radical changes in the Hungarian constitution to favor his own party. Orban caught the European media and political elites by complete surprise.

And, as we sleep here in America because, it "can't happen here," as it is happening here,:

In Germany, Der Spiegel is finally reporting on Beppe Grillo, calling him "the most dangerous man in Europe." Grillo is the failed Italian comedian who used the web to recruit 9 million voters in the recent election, barely one percent short of Mussolini's first vote in 1922, giving him a plurality in parliament.

However, you need not worry Mr., Mrs. Ms. and any other transgenders, etc."Chamberland," because it "can't" happen here.

You can believe that Grillo aims for total power. He says so himself, and his brainwashed followers believe it.

Beppe Grillo sounds like a nutcase, but he is clever as a fox. It's possible that he says crazy things on purpose to get under the media radar. What a crazy comedian this guy Grillo must be! Everybody laughs at him - except his 9 million Italian voters.

Grillo and his followers says that AIDS comes from vaccines for children, or maybe vaccines will make you homosexual. They have it both ways. Jet contrails in the sky are spreading hallucinogens to the people of Italy. Cancer chemotherapy is made by Big Pharma to kill you.

Absurd we say. I mean Hilter, Mao, Benito, Chavez, the Ayatollah and other psychotic nut jobs never made statements that should have chilled the individual's sensibilities, did they?

You can believe that Grillo aims for total power. He says so himself, and his brainwashed followers believe it.

Relax America, we have this immense Atlantic Ocean to protect us...just like it did in 1941. How did that work out?

Along with the rise of the crypto-parties, the euro currency is currently under enormous pressure, and the unelected European Union is testing its powers to carve up to 10% out of bank deposits in Cyprus. If the EU succeeds in its ad hoc banking tax in the small island of Cyprus, it may try the same thing in other member-states. That fear caused turmoil in the world currency markets this week.

The European Union represents socialism with a smiling face, but it is just as elitist, self-serving, and corruptible as the late Soviet Union. Euro-skeptics like to call their super-government the EU-SSR. Member governments are elected by the voters, but the European Parliament is a pure Potemkin Front, just like the Czars of Russia used to make. The EU Parliament in Strasbourg has no legislative powers at all. Rather, the EU is run by appointed "commissions," just as the Soviet Union was run by appointed "soviets" (councels). As a political machine, the EU owes as much to the Soviet Union as it does to more democratic traditions. Naturally, the EU comes complete with its own utopian program of EU-style world governance, with peace and prosperity forever to all who obey its dictates.

Let's not pay attention to this "situation" in Europe.

Over several decades, the European left has constantly accused its democratic opponents of being secret racists and fascists. They are almost always wrong, and after crying Wolf! for these many years, nobody now believes in wolves anymore. But ordinary people in Italy and Eastern Europe are feeling scared. E-mail them if you know people back there.

Guess what: the wolves are back in politics, and they are in cahoots with the Islamist resurgence of the Middle East.

So, does the following alarm fall withing the five (5) year period advanced above?

We believe that the crypto-fascist parties of Europe represent a threat to free countries around the world. We believe they are weak today, but they will become stronger tomorrow if the civilized world ignores them. We believe that fanatics of any kinds - socialist or fascist - are very bad news.

Please check the facts for yourself.

I expect the modern solution is CO2 tunnels, load the bodies on trucks and straight to a landfill. The Weather Underground under Obama's mentor Bill Ayers planned on 10% death rate during their takeover - over 30 million in the US today.

This is hinky even by the standards that apply to hinky reports like this one. I never heard of this guy, although I was a news-literate college student, exposed to this stuff constantly back when it was going on. He presents no documentation and no corroborating witnesses. Most telling is that he's reading from a script. If he'd been there, he wouldn't need it.

Pete:

I am sure you meant "kinky."

However, why is a compromised "government" informant, who has to have made a deal to get to this "lofty" status to be believed?

That is the question.

What is the probative value of his statement?

Adam:

I read the article. Interesting.

Do you claim this article supports the thesis with which Dennis began this thread? Implicit in your rhetorical points above seems to be the idea that if people don't take the premises of this article (or Beck's premises) seriously, they have their head in the sand. At least that's how it reads.

I am trying to see if we can get the goal-posts to stop moving. The thesis that began this thread was that there would be a Nazi regime in 5 years. If the point is something less than that original thesis, then who could really disagree, and/or has sufficient expertise to disagree? And frankly, such a point would be a helluva lot less interesting to ponder, for the reasons I have stated above.

Remember David Duke? He was seen as the harbinger of a Nazi resurgence back in the day. But it never happened.

More apt, perhaps, remember George W. Bush? He was perceived by not a small percentage of the country as the next Hitler. People like Glenn Greenwald had their panties all bunged up every single day over the fact that a fascist dictatorship was on their doorstep, jackboots and all, with a copy of our shredded Constitution in tow. In response to this, I would often question Mr. Greenwald, a self-styled (ahem) "constitutional litigator" along the following lines: if you actually believe this, what are you doing about it? And then Glenn would be silent, or he would occasionally makes sounds about how courageously commanding his keyboard was the best he could do.

So, back to the original qustion: will there be an express self-identified Nazi regime in five years? I say no. Might there be a new regime of some kind in the world with a stronger fascist influence than anybody would like? Probably. But let us not forget the converse: there very likely be a new regime in the world that values freedom, or has greater respect for capitalism as well.

And meanwhile, the world will keep spinning on its axis, more or less (pun intended).

Mr. D:

No clue.

However, I found the article relevant in that I had no clue these assholes in Europe were wandering down the same pathes that led to over a hundred million deaths.

Therefore, I want to ressurect the wisdom of our founders which explicitely directed us to, basically, stay the fuck away from these insane Europeans, or, more politely, "...beware foreign entanglements..."

As to whether there would be an overtly naned "Nazi" regime in 5 years, I would doubt it.

However, as we came real close to it with Huey Long in the 1930's and his psychotic program of "Share Our Wealth," which today has it's tentacles to the Fedral Reserve issues and the redistribution of weath, it is applicable:

Long was a staunch opponent of the Federal Reserve Bank. Together with a group of Congressmen and Senators, Long believed the Federal Reserve's policies to be the true cause of the Great Depression. Long made speeches denouncing the large banking houses of Morgan and Rockefeller centered in New York which owned stock in the Federal Reserve System. He believed that they manipulated the monetary system to their own benefit, instead of the general public's benefit.[27]

As an alternative, Long proposed federal legislation capping personal fortunes, income and inheritances. He used radio broadcasts and founded a national newspaper, the American Progress, to promote his ideas and accomplishments before a national audience. In 1934, he unveiled an economic plan he called Share Our Wealth. Long argued there was enough wealth in the country for every individual to enjoy a comfortable standard of living, but that it was unfairly concentrated in the hands of a few millionaire bankers, businessmen and industrialists.

In March 1933, Long offered a series of bills collectively known as "the Long plan" for the redistribution of wealth. The first bill proposed a new progressive tax code designed to cap personal fortunes at $100 million. Fortunes above $1 million would be taxed at 1 percent; fortunes above $2 million would be taxed at 2 percent, and so forth, up to a 100 percent tax on fortunes greater than $100 million. The second bill limited annual income to $1 million, and the third bill capped individual inheritances at $5 million.[28]

Seems like the progressive redistribution of "wealth" and "property" never gets tired.

I understand your argument that a "Nazi" government will not be "espoused" in the next five (5) years.

However, do not believe that that is the center of this dispute between Denis May and others here. Dennis tends to be rather polemical, as I am.

Therefore, I am willing to understand the essence of his argument.

Kind of like being on the side of the road when Paul Revere raced by and thinking that there was a crazy bastard shouting about the Brits and racing to my home and getting my musket to kill the bastards.

Is radical Islam here for eternity? Islam was radical in the Middle Ages and radical in the 1950’s. English actor John Rhys-Davies (who was of Welsh descent and played Gimli the battle axe swinging dwarf in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy) had some experience with radical Islam as a boy in Tanganyika and from listening to his father who was a colonial officer for Great Britain. His father said to him in the 1950’s that the greatest threat to world peace was radical Islam now that Hitler’s Germany and Tojo’s Japan were defeated.

However if we examine Germany and Japan today . . . well . . . they are civilized after losing a devastating war. Or are they Dennis? I cannot imagine Germany ever embracing the Nazi’s or Japan the militaristic, expansionist government they had in the time leading up to the Second World War. One could argue that radical Islam also lost a war in Iraq and possibly in Afghanistan but they seem to be resurging in Pakistan, Egypt, Iran and in parts of Africa and Asia. And once we disengage from the Middle East several other countries in that area could revert to the middle ages – and Jihad.

Does their religion cultivate bloodthirsty murderous Jihadists? I think it does. They are constantly being brain washed. Islamists are caught in a time loop maintained by the Koran which they are forced to study diligently, and reaffirm five times a day.

I agree that a resurgent Nazism will be called something else . . . perhaps national progressivism. But I expect to see the “trappings” of Hitler’s Germany again: Nazi salutes, brown shirts, goose - step marching, and a charismatic monster in charge. The play, “Evita” depicts Argentina in just such a manner.

American Progressives are clearly in bed with radical Islam just as they were with the Nazi's in the 1930's.

But hasn't the species evolved since the last time Nazis were in power?! History is history; not relevant at all to today's advanced humans.

Read "Liberal Fascism" by Jonah Goldberg. I am sure you will enjoy it. He nails the Liberals square, fair and well for their cozying up to fascist goals and principles. He pointed out that Mussollini in the beginning of his career as Fearless Leader was the darling of the British left wing effetes.

The Muslims in the rip-roaring east have also clasped to their foul bosoms the snake of Nazi anti-semitism.

I doubt that the first time a progressive mentally acknowledges their kinship with Fascism that they experience shock or experience any shame. Rather they experience a eureka! moment, and realize they finally belong.

I think a rational person based on facts can properly psychologize a progressive in such a manner. We pass judgment every day, and I see a coiled snake when I see a progressive. In the interest of *tolerationism* which I do acknowledge (as a rational being) as valid, I attempt to remain cordial when confronted with an Obama supporter (and try not to use phrases like, and their ilk which sounds too cultishly Randian, or in the case of Objectivism Online moderators, too Peikovianly, coltishly, cultishly Randian.)

Does anyone else ever day dream about having super powers, alien knowledge, or excesses of money, and using those tools to right the wrongs of the world? Unlike a progressive or the communistas I would not first euthanize those closest to their ideology like the wishy washy socialists or in my case the Randian cultists.

Ain't I grand!

It seems worldwide Fascism is the Progressive goal, once all capital everywhere is under effective government control there won't be a better "outside" system to compete and they can turn the screws as tight as they want.

Brrrr! How does such evil come to exist in a free America and a free world?

Odd, isnt it Dennis, most times, youse brings out the jokester in me?

Isn't it ironic that the old left as in some Soviet Union style Communist sympathizers viewed Hitlers Nazism as their biggest foe? And the old political spectrum charts showed communists on the fart left and Nazis on the fart right? But as Rand pointed out the right is actually not the fart right with Nazis but in reality the far right is reserved for the people who love liberty? Nazis, Communists, and Progressives are all on the far left.

I see a connection between the Columbine, Newtown, and Batman shooters and with the progressive / neo-Nazis. They are all mentally, terribly wrong inside and seek power over others to right their internal wrongs.

There is a reason cities run by Progressives don't put away criminals and keep crime rates high [Chicago] - it gives them an excuse to take away more and more rights to keep people safe. Progressives need gun free zones and crazies on the streets to generate excuses to take away guns. You can't create the Fabian Socialist Progressive dream with an armed populace. Once disarmed gradual socialism moves right into hardcore Fascism, after that North Korean style communism.

On what facts do you base your supposition that the crime rate is deliberately caused by certain parties. And could that effect be accounted for by some other means. I am well aware the a broken clock tells the right time twice a day and I am further aware that paranoids sometimes have real enemies. But the coincidence of the effect with your hypothesis is not sufficient proof that your hypothesis is right.

If you recall there was a time when the theory of Caloric accounted for the expansion and contraction of liquids under different temperature conditions. That did not prove Caloric exist or was the cause of the expansion or contraction
