Why does the new system tell me "your post is too short"? Does it not understand the concept of multum in parva? Or is it a comment on my writing style? Does it tell other OLers (I name no names) their posts are too long?

Carol,

I have to look at this later, but I think it's an automatic setting to frustrate spammers. I've seen this on other forums.

It's probably a good idea, too, despite causing an awkward feeling in the beginning.

Write 3 words (or whatever) instead of one. In a pinch, copy paste the word a few times

It doesn't cost any more... :)

Michael, it costs me more. I am serious. Sometimes just one word is all I need to say and says it most effectively. You as a writer know that.

I do not mean a swear word either.

Oh, I don't know how you did it but I suppose it is doable even by me.

Here I was all ready to huff and puff about how you are our publisher (at your own expense and I hope nobody ever forgets that) and chief editor, but not our copy editor, and on and on I would go about how software is telling us what to write and interfering with our precious creative processes....

I was trained as a journalist and you don't get over that, but you get forgiven for it , by good people.

Adam,

With the update, it looks like IPB wants to make matters simpler for everyone, but like Microsoft, they like to do it by totally screwing up what people have become accustomed to doing and not telling them about it.

I just fiddled with this.

To embed a YouTube video, just paste the url and post. This won't work for the url you have above, probably because it has "embed" in the url string. Just past the normal url you get from viewing it on YouTube. Or the url from the YouTube's "Share" feature. Forget about "embed.

There's just one detail. You have to make sure your url includes "http://" at the beginning. So if it doesn't, just type it in.

I found that out by fiddling with it just now. I will fiddle some more and then post instructions in a support thread. For instance, I need to find out if this works with other video hosting sites.

Michael

EDIT: btw - Here is your video using the short code in YouTube's "Share" feature. All I am doing is looking at the video on YouTube, clicking the "Share" button, copying the shortened url code that appears, and pasting it below.

Michael, thanks for the tip on embeds and for the critique of the new IPB update. I have been looking at the IPB 'distress' forums, where the new comment-editing system is causing a lot of grief.

For those who are outfoxed (like me) by the inability to properly quote and split-quote, the first button on the left of the Edit box will give you the plain code ... and lessen frustration in excerpting.

This video is from a thread at the Invision Community: http://community.invisionpower.com/topic/373063-quoting-in-ipb-34-not-satisifed/#entry2335274. It gives tips on how to split quotes in the new update, and can take care of orphans ...

I admire yours Adam, but I am starting to wonder about it. I sent you a PM on Nov 28 which asked for a reply which never came. Are you mad at me for something beyond the usual? Have I been dropped from the circle of your acquaintance for reasons I know not of?

The message was only Socialist propaganda again cunninglydisguised as as a flyer from Madame Merciless Castle of Pain, but still. Manners is manners.

Adam tells me he did not get this message. I received no messages from Oct 19 to Dec. 2, during which time I sent five.

If there was some glitch and anybody sent me a message I did not answer during this period, please let me know.
