Guyau
. . .Heh. Did you know that Rand is the only philosopher who has ever defined art?! I didn't know it! In fact, I was pretty sure that I had seen dozens of philolophers' definitions of art, but . . . Sures [ ] says that Rand was the only one . . . .Correct, Rand was not the first to offer a definition of art. It may be that Sures meant that no definitions previously offered had succeeded at getting much traction on what is art. Be that as it may, I notice that in 2006 she gave a lecture “The Value of Ayn Rand’s Philosophy of Art” whose abstract reads in part: “Most people have mistaken assumptions about art, such as: art can’t be defined . . . .” This suggests she recognizes that some people (and not only subscribers to Rand’s definition) think art can be defined. This way of speaking also suggests she recognizes—unlike in the radio-interview statement ten years earlier—that some people besides Rand have offered definitions of art.Coming soon:Defining Art, Creating the CanonPaul Crowther (2011) Edited September 5, 2011 by Stephen Boydstun
