Simon van der Meer who shared the 1983 Nobel Prize with Carlo Rubio died at 85. Van der meer used proton/anti-proton interaction to generate enough energy to reveal weak force interactions. The weak force is what makes radioactive decay and fusion happen.

Shades of Star Trek! Using a matter/anti-matter annihilation to produce a useful laboratory result! What a clever experimenter he was. It is the experimenters who keep physics honest.
