  1. William, rumors of Bill Dwyer's demise have been greatly exaggerated! ;-) I don't know who Mary Ann is or was, but Bill is still going strong at age 78. Dennis
  3. Except he is opposed to aid in dying: President Trump has officially nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch for the vacant seat on the Supreme Court. As a devoted member of this movement [Compassion and Choices], you need to know how frightening this is: Judge Gorsuch opposes medical aid in dying and wrote The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia (2006), heralded as “the most comprehensive argument against their legalization--ever published.”
  4. Interesting conversation with Freeman Dyson.
  5. Baal, That's quite a story. Thanks for sharing. <<I used to do that when I was young. You ought to be doing that NOW! In our club, most of the members are old timers, so the challenge is to get more young people interested to keep the hobby alive for future generations.
  6. Baal, I don't know the scale-speed. In normal playtime, I doubt that anyone pays it much attention. However, I will make an inquiry. During Operations sessions when the desire is to run as prototypically as possible, maybe then it is a factor looked at. For our layout, the intent is to make it conform largely to ~1940-1960-ish scenery and much of the rolling stock, so I'm sure there is no interest in modelling mag-lev. But your idea might become popular once we get room temperature superconductivity.
  7. I joined a club about six months ago, part of which is shown below.
  8. Melania speaks: A 60-ish man allows himself to be "egged on?" Oh, please!
  9. Donald Trump may be exploiting a psychological bias to win votes - James Surowiecki I think James Surowiecki has a good insight here. Bet on the longshot Trump rather than the certain disaster Hillary.
  10. Isn't this cute? How long could that wheel spin if he left the two balls in place?
  11. Ben Carson's strange beliefs on science.
  12. Totally tasteless. But funny. So, I was walking through the mall in Portland and I saw that there was a Muslim bookstore. I was wondering what exactly was in a Muslim bookstore so I went in. As I was wandering around taking a look, the clerk stopped me and asked if he could help me? “Do you have a copy of Donald Trump’s book on his U.S. Immigration Policy regarding Muslims and illegal Mexicans?” The clerk said, “F— off, get out and stay out!” I said, “Yes, that’s the one. Do you have it in paperback?”
  13. Trump Says He Heroically Avoided Capture in Vietnam by Staying in U.S. AMES, IOWA (The Borowitz Report)-Presidential candidate Donald Trump revealed a little-known episode of personal heroism from his youth on Saturday, telling an Iowa audience that he narrowly avoided capture in Vietnam by remaining in the United States for the duration of the war. “The Cong were after me,” Trump said, visibly stirred by the memory. “And then, just in the nick of time, I got my deferment.” The former reality-show star said he had never shared his record as a war hero before because “I don’t like to boast.” He said that he only disclosed the episode now because “the way this nation treats our deferment veterans is a disgrace.” Trump complained that he received no official commendation or medal for his heroism, calling the lack of recognition “shameful.” “Those brave Americans who, like me, avoided being captured by not serving at all-we are the true heroes,” he said. Trump’s tale of valor appeared to move many members of his audience, some of whom waited in line after his speech to thank him for his lack of service.
  14. In the last Greek crisis, the Greek government agreed to the lenders’ austerity measures and other economic reforms. They were meant to lead to a 4% annual growth. Look what happened to Greece. Noted economist, Joseph Stiglitz recently wrote: The economics behind the programme that the “troika” (the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund) foisted on Greece five years ago has been abysmal, resulting in a 25% decline in the country’s GDP. I can think of no depression, ever, that has been so deliberate and had such catastrophic consequences: Greece’s rate of youth unemployment, for example, now exceeds 60%.
  15. Public humiliation - maybe there is a positive role it can have in discouraging individuals from committing criminal acts and embarking on lives of crime.
  16. Thanks for posting this, Jerry.
  17. Cash McCall was a good, pro-capitalist movie.
  18. This one is for you especially, Michael. The Department of Defense briefed the President this morning. They told President Obama that two Brazilian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan. To everyone’s surprise, he collapsed onto his desk, head in his hands, visibly shaken, almost in tears. Finally, he composed himself and asked, “Just how many is a bazilian?”
  19. I have no experience (since I was a kid), but am still very interested.
  20. There is controversy regarding the name Washington Redskins being disrespectful of and insulting to our Native Americans. Even the President has engaged in the conversation and has suggested that the name be changed. BREAKING NEWS – The Washington Redskins have decided to drop the name ‘Washington’ due to the heavy embarrassment.
