  1. A few tools in your toolbox doesn't necessarily mean you can build a house. The engineering and science curriculum is doable by people with good rote learning skills. Suppose you have a person with no real understanding or problem solving skills but the arrogance of a stupid person with an engineering degree. I think the problem in general with education factories is emphasis on rote learning without understanding or critical thinking skill. That's where 'consensus is science' comes from.
  2. contempt: 1 condescension, derision, disdain, disregard, disrespect, mockery, neglect, scorn, slight 2 (a state of contempt) disgrace, dishonor, humiliation, shame William is not disguising it much these days... Somethings not going as well as expected evidently.
  3. http://pjmedia.com/vodkapundit/2015/07/15/crazy-like-a-dissident/ "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis
  4. I once blamed the phenomenon known as Brant on the demon alcohol but learned I was in error. Now I just accept the wonder and infinite variety of nature...

  7. You have a broad view of truth? You remind me of my sister who scolded me with "Everyone's got their own truth!". Your intellectual house is on fire and you desperately need to be mentored. Sorry, anyone I could recommend is either dead or busy. Ayn Rand appears to be too hard for you. Try Hoffer or Thoreau, work your way up.
  8. I concluded some time back that you make stuff up. If you're not twelve years old it's inexcusable. Pardon me if I don't take you seriously but even if 90 % of what you're saying has some merit I don't have the time to separate the wheat from the chaff. There are smarter more honest people, I simply don't need to try to sort you out.
  9. Hey, the gorilla is handsome, take your points and count your lucky stars... Hi Kat! Love you and miss you...
  10. Mike, am I right to say that what you look for is an intellectual individualist? My attraction to Trump was largely his contrast with the present incumbent, and that he seems to offer a sharp turn back towards American individualism, something I think is missed badly. However I concede that his may well be simply a non-intellectual and pragmatic ("counterfeit" or "subjective" - to use Nathaniel's terms) individualism. Then ultimately he might be a long-term setback to the cause, after some short-term improvements. More accurately an intelligent principled individualist. I believe Carly is sincere when she criticizes the IRS and the huge amount of regulation in this country which crushes individual initiative. She believes in the founding principles of this country. Trump, I believe, is a crony capitalist, he inherited his business, is "connected", and given power will take care of his friends.
  11. Keeps getting better for Trump... Feel the love... Carly is better in every possible way, brains, self control, leadership, but the loud over-sized male chimp gets all the love. DNA rules. [just tying together a couple of threads]
  12. "Chimpanzees are violent and aggressive" Bingo! Our closest match. We share 97% of our dna with chimps...

  14. I believe Roslyn Ross would say the kids are being treated like lab rats. Still hard to sort out, I don't yet see the evidence the mom is a monster except the judge doesn't like her. I have been in "the system" as a child, my mom was imprisoned, committed suicide when she got out. My mom, with all her faults and alcoholism was a far better parent than any orphanage or foster home. I felt loved at home, dogs in a kennel are loved far more than kids in an institution in my experience. The courts treated my dad like shit, he desperately wanted to take care of us, they took us from him. He served honorably in WWII and Korea and was career army infantry, then Air Force (after losing his toes to frostbite in Korea). He was treated like a criminal by the state of Ohio. I recommend Roslyn Ross's book very highly. I think it's the best book on raising humans ever written, only not if your only interest is raising lab rats.
  15. I don't understand what happened here. Mom and Dad separated, Dad gets visitation and the kids refuse to see him? The oldest kid says because the Dad hit Mom, the judge says the Dad wasn't convicted so the kids are in contempt. Seems like over reach. Don't kids have any rights? The judge says "dads a nice guy", the kids don't agree. Freedom of disassociation. Not saying moms not a raving lunatic... Institutionalizing the kids for years is a crime in itself, even if mom is a lunatic.
  16. Tony, I like what you said. I would trust Carly Fiorina more dealing with people like Putin. Putin knows how to push the buttons of big egos like Trump's and make them look like fools. Not going to happen with Fiorina. There is nothing Trump knows about deal making and tough decisions that Fiorina doesn't know better. She's a lot smarter than Trump. My opinion.
  17. Wrongish. (but thanks to Adam and you for the laugh!) Or maybe it should be right. It annoys me when I see sloppy attributions. If you weight out a long line of my Link, Please glissandos, some are cranky, some are beige, some may be quarrelsome in themselves. So add a label if it suits the moment. No offense intended. But I had to laugh. In another thread you brought up finger wagging, I thought "What!! William is the OL scold if there ever was one." I thought I would share the fun.

  20. Maybe you would know Brant...I have always want to track down the quote that Mac Arthur allegedly told to President Kennedy, who contrary to every Democratic President after Kennedy never put his ass in the line of fire. Did you ever hear that Mac Arthur said something like that? We used it heavily in the '60's in draft arguments and debates as well as opposition to a war with our forces being hamstrung by "policy." https://books.google.com/books?id=KS-6XrdalGkC&pg=PA102&lpg=PA102#v=onepage&q&f=false It refers to a footnote 43 and I cannot seem to navigate to it. A... Adam, I'm not able to add the image of the page but the reference is: "The Bay of Pigs Invasion: A Comprehensive Chronology of Events," in Bay of Pigs Declassified, edited by Peter Kornbluh (New York: New Press, 1998), pp. 269-70.
