  1. Ted,

Thank you for the explanation. I don't know whether the author intended it, but it's an interesting connection to think about anyhow. I tend to take it in a more positive way, preferring not to think the author was implying anything negative about the material world. Actually, I tend to disregard the author's intentions and place my own meaning in the quotation.

Then again, I'm thinking about the changes Janie (the main character) goes through with each marriage. Her growth is sort of charted through her three marriages. Now I have to go back to where that quote is in the book (during which marriage? what events were going on at this time?) and sort of reevaluate.

Edit: I use the word 'tend' too much maybe?

  2. Ted,

Could you please, if you care to, explain why you think the above quotes (one or the other) are a sentiment out of sethian gnosticism? I don't know much about it myself. I googled it and read a bit about it, briefly, and I don't think I really get the connection that you see.

Direct, clear explanations sometimes require direct, clear questions.

  3. I just finished re-reading "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston tonight. Here is a quote that struck me that I thought some of you might appreciate.

"When God had made The Man, he made him out of stuff that sung all the time and glittered all over. Then after that some angels got jealous and chopped him into millions of pieces, but still he glittered and hummed. So they beat him down to nothing but sparks but each little spark had a shine and a song. So they covered each one over with mud. And the lonesomeness in the sparks made them hunt for one another, but the mud is deaf and dumb. Like all the other tumbling mud-balls, Janie had tried to show her shine."

    And here's one I like...just for me, I guess.

"They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God."

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes - Home

i just posted a video that has the song in it, because I think the official video sucks, but the song rocks.

  5. Brant (brant),

i was only making a comment about people who use crystal meth, not making a judgment on whether it is right or wrong to be a speed freak or crystal meth user, whichever you wanna call it. so, i wouldn't say i was neglectful.

i would define 'freak' as more of a state of mind. kind of like...when i am on speed, i do not act as though i normally would, as my normal self. i am acting abnormally. freakishly. i no longer value the things i valued while i was sober.

you neglected why it is wrong to use the word 'freak' to enforce social conformity within a group.

  6. LOL. Well, I am not much of a girlie girl, but I'll spray perfume in here or something. I didn't do much really on my B-day. I ate dinner with the fam and then went to a bar with my boyfriend and a friend and two sisters. Had the following: Two shots of patron, a rock lobster, a buttery nipple, a chocolate cake shot (Yum!), a blue moon and a corona. I think that is all? I love tequila (Tho i will stick to Cuervo 'cause $8 shots are not acceptable)...this weekend is going to be awesome. Teehee! (Hard to get wasted when you have to wake up at 6:15 for work...bleh...

P.S. I made my boyfriend strip for me, so I at least didn't miss out on a strip tease! (lol...jk???)

  7. Thank you, Angie! You are the fuckin' bomb, dude. I totally missed your b-day too and now I feel like an asshat. Maybe one day we can get together for real and have drinks. Would definitely be a blast. :D Now I feel all special 'n shit. Much love your way!!

Thanks everyone else, too! Hope you all are doing well. I do still lurk sometimes...I'm a creeper like that, fa sho.

    Saxon, out. :P

  8. BOO!

Chris! I'm sorry I didn't get your PM! My email usually notifies me when I get PMs here, but apparently this time it didn't. Just lettin' ya know I haven't died quite yet. How are you folks?

Side note: I think that people can sometimes be repelled, leave, then come back later to see if things have changed.
