Blacklisted by History

I posted on OL proper about this new book by M. Stanton Evans. It is great news it is finally out. Stan Evans has been working on this book for several years. A quick look shows he takes up all the controversies about McCarthy's career. Mr Evans is in his 70ths so I am sad to note that seems to be having no book signings or events.

Wyatt Earp and Tombstone

These are two movies that the climax in the gunfight at OK Corral. Both of these movies came out about the same year and they both are being shown on cable. Wyatt Earp is the life story of Earp who became the most famous Western sheriff. Earp lived long enough to survive into 20ths so he was able to create his own biography. He also was what today would be called a technical advisor to some early movies. The story is primarily about Earp and Doc Holliday. Doc Holliday is the more interesti

Cross on church in Bagdad

Yesterday citizens of Baghdad put a cross on a Christian church in Baghdad. Some bloggers are calling the equivalent of the flag raising on Iwo Jima. It should not be forgotten that the battle of Iwo Jima last several months after the flag raising.

Some comments on election 2007

This 2007 is an election year. It's not for US President. Three governors are up(Louisiana, Kentucky and Mississippi), state legislatures in five states(the above three, Virginia, and New Jersey and a lot of local elections. Louisiana has already elected Jindal® governor. Kentucky is expected to elect a Democrat and Hayley Barbour® is expected to reelected in Mississippi. The lower house in Virginia which has been held by the GOP could go to the Democrats. However I want talk about some en

Book TV

For 48 hours on weekends C-Span 2 has Book TV. Book TV has 48 hours of programming about non-fiction books. You can watch book events at bookstores, think tanks, and universities. It is programming for literates unlike the old movies, sports events, and tired programs on the other stations. I find the range of books is a happy one. On the first Sunday of every month Book TV does a three hour interview with an author. They have had David Horowitz, Christopher Hitchens, and Tammy Bruce among

Paul Tibbets

Paul Tibbets was the man who commanded the planes that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Thhere are some libertarians who call him a war criminal and murderer. I don't agree. Paul Tibbets was rather a man who saved millions of lives. Both American and Japanese. He never regretted dropping the bomb and he was right. I'm glad he lived to be 92.

TCM and the Hollywood Ten

Today is 60th anniversary of the Hollywood Ten hearings. Turner Classic Movies is going to show some of the Hollywood Ten movies today. The blog Powerline links to a post about the whole subject which is very informative. TCM does not tonight acknowledge the the Hollywood Ten were members of the Communist Party. The Hollywood Ten tried to put Communist propaganda into Hollywood movies. They also did a very good job of keeping anti-communist movies from being made by the Hollywood studios.

Porter Wagoner

Porter Wagoner died today. He was 80 and had cancer. He was a big name in country music. He wrote and sang Green, Green Grass of Home. His biggest claim to fame was he discovered Dolly Parton. Dolly's was his girl singer on TV show. Dolly wrote I Will Always Love You when she left his show. Dolly was always grateful to Porter and helped him out when he was going through a rough patch. Porter Wagoner was always a little to twangy for me but he was a class act. Dolly is pretty good too.

Fred Litwin: A wonderful life

Earlier today I attended a memorial service for my friend Fred Litwin. It was a marvelous occasion. Fred had a long life. He died in September of this year. He had retired and closed his wonderful furniture store in 2003. The memorial service showed the full range of his friends and his life. All of the people in attendance got to remember Fred's insults and banter. They heard about his great love for his wife and daughters. They heard and remembered his being an honest businessman. The

Jena Six again

Instapundit and Hit & Run had a link to a Christian Science Monitor story by the editor of the Jena newspaper. The story debunked the coverage of the Jena incidents. Hit & Run linked to an analysis of the Monitor story with critical analysis yesterday. I urge my readers to look at both of the commentaries. I must add the House committee hearings broadcast by C Span seemed to have more heat than light. Some of the congressman were disgraceful.

Laissez Faire Books

It's really true that they are closing. Back in the 70ths I worked for Books for Libertarians which Laissez Faire bought out. Roy Childs originally wrote reviews for BFL. I knew some of the people mentioned in some of the post on OL. It will be missed.

Louisiana's Election

Louisiana has elected Bobby Jindl who is the first non-white governor of the state. He probably received very few black votes. He received a strong majority of white voters. Here is my question does the vote in Louisiana mean that white voters are willing are thinking less about race than black voters. Perhaps Louisiana white voters are more interested in honesty and ability. One should remember the tremndous incompetence shown by the current governor along with the incompetence of the mayo

Quo Vidas

I have not seen this movie recently. I saw it when it came out in the early 50ths. It had Rome burning. Christians being thrown to the lions. Emperor Nero being totally off the wall. It also had a love story which being only eight I completely ignored. When I saw the movie later in life I found I could still ignore the love story between Marcus and Lygia. I could not ignore the love store between Petronius and Eunice. Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr could be ignored. Leo Genn could not b

Deborah Kerr

I just saw a report that Deborah Kerr died. She was an English movie actress in the 50ths & 60ths who got nominated six times but never won an Oscar. Many OL readers will remember her in The King & I but my favorite role was the hen-pecked daughter in Separate Tables. She has the great line "I'm going finish my dinner." I hope TCM will show some of her films in the next couple of days.
