I have recently reseen "Brokeback Mountain". I marvel at Heath's performance. He was so young and now he gone. His last line in "Brokeback" was "I'm sorry". It the only thing one can say now.
It was on TCM this morning. AFI selected it as the greatest comedy of all time. I must say that I laughed at almost every scene. Sadly only one member of the cast is alive. Tony Curtis who after several years making many b-movies finally came into his own as an actor. He had done Sweet Smell of Success which had moved him out of the pretty boy status. Michael Barone in a recent column made the point that in the five electoral events five different people have won them. Only three states have voted New Hampshire, Iowa and Wyoming. Wyoming only for the GOP. Romney leads the GOP. Obama leads the Dems.
He died today. He was the man who conquered Everest. He is also the only man to stand and the North & South Poles. I can remember seeing the movie "The Conquest of Everest". He was something of an environmentalist but he was not wacko. He also had authority from all he had done.
I have attended the last three TOC Summer Seminars. I don't know if I will go to the next one. The invitation to the head of another Objectivist inter-net forum has angered me and others. I consider this person to be anti good manners. From reports he behaves in his forum like a bad bar room lout. I hope TAS will rethink this invitation.
In a little while we should know who won.Why simply because something is first has it become so important. But the caucus is being treated like it's the Presidential election. That doesn't happen till Nov. Iowa is a very unrepresentative place. So is New Hampshire. One of the best proofs about the New Hampshire being unusual is it was selected for the Free State Project.
I've been here two years. Only MSK has more posts than me.I had been on SOLO and then Return to Reason. I haven't been on either of those websites since I joined OL. With the case of SOLO it sounds like I haven't missed a thing. I have been through some health problems since coming on to OL. Radley Belko has a weekly poll at his blog. This week's topic is the worst prosecutor. He has removed Mike Nifong and Alberto Gonzales. The ones left include Germonle Wilson case prosecutor in Georgia and Richard Paey's prosecutor in Florida. The others are interesting too Prosecutors have a huge amount of power for good and ill. On January 25th we get Rambo. It's a new movie. Apparently Rambo is fighting the Burmese. Isn't Stallone getting a little old for this? A movie with Burmese villains. Why not with Islamic villains? I not afraid of the Burmese attacking Washington.
She was a great character actress working in the 30ths and 40ths. She usually played a spinster or a widow. She was not a beauty. I just watched her as Miss Pross in "A Tale of Two Cities" which is one of her great roles. When you watch old movies you see these wonderful character actors who always seem to provide great moments in these old movies. They are all missed.
Last night (Dec 28) TCM showed "A Guy Named Joe". At the end of the movie Osborne noted that the screenplay was by Dalton Trumbo who Osborne said was accused of being a member of the Communist Party and that Trumbo was blacklisted. Dalton Trumbo was a member of the Communist Party. His party card was presented at the HUAC hearings that Ayn Rand testified at. Dalton Trumbo later admitted his membership in the Party. Radley Belko has posted the sickest video on his blog "The Agitator". It is a church choir singing a parody of "We Are the World". The choir members are from this church that demonstrates at the funerals of American serviceman celebrating the deaths of the servicemen because in this group's view the United States tolerates homosexuality which they believe is a sin. I just found out that Steven Truscott's mother Doris died Thursday. She was 82. She had gone through a life that is hard to imagine. Heard her son sentenced to death. The agony of having to visit him in jail and then prison. This year she was able to witness her son's exoneration. All I can think to say if she were before me now would be "Thank You!. All of her life she knew one fact. Her son was not murderer and rapist. She was right.
The FEC can't do anything. The commission doesn't have a quorum so they can't issue any matching funds. Today's Washington Post story mentioned the Ron Paul blimp as a specific example of campaign activity the Commission can't deal with. Let's hope it continues!
