This is a big Mexican holiday. Wasn't Cinco de Mayo a battle against the USA?

It was against the French. Napoleon was trying to set up a stooge as emperor, and this was the battle that finally got rid of him.

Thanks! I've seen the movie. Lincoln invoked the Monroe Doctrine.

Today somebody asked me, "What day is Cinco de Mayo? May 1?"
*chuckle*

May 1st is May Day. People used to dance around May poles.
The Communists used to have big demonstrations. In 1953 and 1954 the American schools in Japan were cancelled because of demonstrations.
To be very clear I never danced around a May pole. I don't think I know anyone who did.
