This article really brings in to focus the amount of generational work that had to take place to create the modern computer, therefore it makes all future advancements seem possible

Babbage had the concept of a stored program computer (program would have been stored on punch cards). His design concept exceeded the mechanical precision that was available for most of the 19 th century. Stored program computers were not possible until electro-mechnical devices were invented. So the earliest possible date for a working stored program computer would have been around 1870.

Even so, Ada Augusta (Lady Lovelace) wrote the first programming manual around 1850. The idea was "in the wind" but it had to wait for the technology.
