Here is a review of the genetic mutations that made us what we are.

We are purely accidental.

Humans seem to be apes that adapted to nontropical climates. The adaptations include:

1. Humans have 4 times the starch splitting enzyme as chimps have. This enables humans to digest potatoes and grains better than chimps can. Chimps live in the tropics and can eat fruit all year round. In nontropical climates, fruit is not available all year round and the ability to digest starch is useful. And contrary to what some health nuts say, humans are adapted to cooked food, at least cooked starches.

2. The human brain can use ketones instead of glucose. The chimp brain cannot. This means humans can fast; chimps cannot. If you live in the tropics and therefore have food all year round, you don't need to fast. But if you live in a nontropical climate, food might be scarce some of the year and the ability to fast might be useful.

3. Humans are smarter than chimps. Picking fruits off trees doesn't require much intelligence. Agriculture requires more intelligence. Living in the open in the tropics where it is always warm doesn't require much intelligence. Building houses and keeping them warm requires more intelligence.

So what are humans? Humans are anthropoid apes. The anthropoid apes are: chimp, bonobo, gorilla, orangutan, gibbon, and one more, human. But humans, unlike the others, are adapted to nontropical climates.
