MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — When men wearing military fatigues and carrying weapons showed up in pickup trucks, villagers thought Nigerian soldiers had finally come to protect them from Boko Haram.

But it was a disguise. The gunmen rounded up everyone in the village center and then started shooting.

Altogether, Boko Haram militants slaughtered hundreds of people in three villages in the far northeast corner of Nigeria, witnesses said Thursday, describing the latest attack by the Islamic extremist group that drew international attention for the kidnapping of more than 300 schoolgirls.

A community leader who witnessed the killings on Monday said residents had pleaded for the military to send soldiers to protect the area after they heard that militants were about to attack.

The militants arrived in Toyota HiLux pickup trucks — commonly used by the military — and told the civilians they were soldiers and that they had come "to protect you all," the same tactic used by the group when they kidnapped the girls from a school in the town of Chibok on April 15.

"We all thought they were the soldiers whom we earlier reported to that the insurgents might attack us," said the community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared for his life.

After the militants forced everyone into the village centers, "they began to shout 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar,' then they started to fire at the people continuously for a very long time until all who had gathered were dead," he said. Allahu akbar means God is great.

The attack comes as more than 270 schoolgirls are still being held by Boko Haram more than two months after their abductions from a school in Chibok town in April. Several dozen of the girls managed to escape.

About 30 people were reported to have been killed by the extremists in the latest attack. Elderly residents fled their homes, trekking 15 miles to seek help.

Among those abducted by gunmen were women with young children and babies – a common occurrence in Borno state since last year, Nigeria’s Premium Times reported.

Boko Haram, a violent Islamist militia fighting for an Islamic state in Nigeria stepped up its attacks beginning five years ago and has recently launched violent raids on villages, markets, bus stations, churches and schools.

MAIDUGURI Nigeria (Reuters) - Suspected Islamist Boko Haram fighters have abducted dozens of boys and men in a raid on a remote village in northeast Nigeria, loading them onto trucks and driving them off, witnesses who fled the violence said on Friday.

The kidnappings came four months after Boko Haram, which is fighting to reinstate a medieval Islamic caliphate in religiously mixed Nigeria, abducted more than 200 schoolgirls from the village of Chibok. They are still missing.

In a continuing escalation of violence, Boko Haram has now taken its campaign to another level, seizing and controlling large swaths of land in Nigeria's northeast. The group's five-year rampage has killed over 10,000 people, and the government's declaration of a state of emergency last year in the northeastern states of Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa has done little to quell the violent insurgency. Boko Haram capped its recent takeover of Gwoza, a Borno town with a population of 50,000, by declaring an Islamic caliphate in the region.

Celebrating this achievement, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau released a video over the weekend, which was obtained by AFP. In the 52-minute film, Shekau declares the establishment of an Islamic caliphate in Nigeria, asserting that "[f]or us there is nothing like Nigeria but Islamic Caliphate." He does not mention the Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi or his recent declaration of a caliphate.

The peril in Nigeria was driven home Tuesday during a House hearing.

Nigerians are scheduled to vote Feb. 14 from a slate of several presidential candidates, including Christian incumbent Goodluck Jonathan and Muslim challenger Mohammadu Buhari, to lead the nation’s 173 million people. An election for local leadership will be held Feb. 28.

In 2011, Mr. Jonathan’s victory over Mr. Buhari triggered terrible sectarian violence in the Muslim north. More than 700 churches were burned, hundreds of Christians were targeted and killed, and thousands of Christian businesses and homes were torched.

This article from the NY Times is quite revealing in that nothing has been done in Central Africa by this current administration as this Mahdi has becaume a significant threat.

A decade ago, the sect did not yet call itself Boko Haram, but its ideology was as hard line then as it is now.

“He was gingering up the boys to become wild,” said Aji Modu, a producer at the state television station here, who recalled the harsh-voiced Mr. Shekau preaching near his house in the Gwange neighborhood in 2008. “ ‘The government is no longer doing anything for you,’ ” Mr. Modu recalled him saying.

This is the picture of a deadly force that was essentially brought by his father to this Islamic "school" and left there for his entire young life.

But in a video released last week that showed the kidnapped girls for the first time, Mr. Shekau gave no sense that he feared being a hunted man, instead appearing to glory in the newfound attention.

“When we say we must obey Allah, the world must certainly change,” Mr. Shekau ranted, by turns leering and grinning in the video. “You are even saying I have departed from moral values. Do you have moral values?” he thundered in Hausa, the dominant language of Nigeria’s north.

Said to be in his mid-30s to his early 40s, Mr. Shekau was born in a remote village on the border with Niger, in the neighboring state of Yobe. When he was a young boy he was taken by his father for Quranic studies to a mallam, or “learned one,” in Maiduguri, a center of Islamic teaching. “He was the most troublesome of all of his students,” the mallam’s son recalled last week, outside his one-story mud-walled house in a dense neighborhood here. “He was arguing with the mallam all the time,” said the teacher’s son, Baba Fanani.

Five Years of Attacks by Boko Haram in Nigeria

Boko Haram, the radical group that abducted more than 200 girls from a Nigerian village in April, has steadily increased the frequency and brutality of its attacks since its formation in 2002.

The group went underground for nearly a year after Mr. Yusuf’s death. But in June 2010, Mr. Shekau resurfaced in a video, promising new attacks. He made good on the promise, to a fault. In September of that year came the spectacular assault on the Bauchi prison in which more than 700 were freed, right under the noses of the hapless authorities. It was the prelude to a bloody and savage new war against the Nigerian state.

“Anybody, even if he is a learned Muslim teacher, if we confirm that he exposes us to the government, his children will become orphans and his wife will become a widow, in God’s name,” Mr. Shekau said after an attack on a bar here in June 2011 that killed 25 people.

KANO, Nigeria — With anger swelling over corruption, inequality and a devastating Islamist insurgency in the nation’s north, Nigerians chose a former general who once ruled with an iron hand to be their next president, according to election results on Tuesday.

The election was the most competitive presidential race ever in Nigeria, one of the largest democracies in the world. Now, if power is handed over peacefully, it will be a major shift for the nation — the first transfer of power between civilians of different parties in a country that has spent much of its post-colonial history roiled by military coups.

With all but one of Nigeria’s 36 states counted, the former military ruler, Muhammadu Buhari, held a lead of more than two million nearly votes over President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Times predicts through their dirty rose colored glasses that this may signal the emergence of a two-party democracy as a model for the smaller African states.

On Mr. Jonathan’s watch, Nigeria has been pummeled by Boko Haram, its economic fortunes have plunged with falling oil prices, economic inequality is rampant and corruption scandals have buffeted the president’s image.

Mr. Buhari swept critical competitive states in the country’s southwest. A belated convert to democracy, Mr. Buhari also piled up large vote totals, as expected, in his northern stronghold, crushing the incumbent here in Kano, Nigeria’s second-largest city.

Analysts said that the election could mean the beginning of a competitive two-party system in a country often seen as a bellwether on the continent.

“It is very significant in our democratic growth, in grounding democracy and consolidating it,” said Ebere Onwudiwe, a political scientist with the Ken Nnamani Center for Leadership and Development. “We can’t have a one-party democracy. We’re setting a very great example for the rest of the smaller states in Africa.”

You can take very young boys and essentially do anything with them from using them sexually to turning them into remorseless killers. They'll kill anyone you tell them to like it was nothing. Never mind it all catching up to them five or ten years later, if they live that long. There'll be more boys in the pipeline. You can do the same with girls but they have other uses. It's all part of a cost benefit ratio and they have more value than boys for being used sexually and cleaning up around the hut.

In all this the Muslim religion is the religion of enabling convenience. Christianity is a gross moral rebuke in almost every respect, maybe even more so than Judaism. I speculate that too many Jews are too liberal, mush-headedly nice or basically appeasers. They keep voting for Obama. WTF?
