Please have a look at this article on chemical kinetics. He shows that "energy barriers" exist in chemical processes that slow down the effects of the second law of thermodynamics, which says that energy will of itself and its own nature tend to disperse into larger and larger sets of micro states. It is for this reason that most of the combustible organic materials we commonly use do not burst into flame readily. And it is the reason we do not age and die in a hurry.

Thank you for the explanatory paragraph and not merely putting up a link.

Valuable explanations may be wrong but still valuable. Depends on who you are and what you are about. Reading the article doesn't protect me or anyone else from "spontaneous combustion" though I still find it mildly interesting.
