Michael Stuart Kelly
How to Handle Buzz-KillsAs a person who started out in adult life as a hardcore Randian, I have mellowed and accepted my inner woo-wwo. That's a quip, but it's got a grain of truth in it. As I have become less interested in manifesting harsh judgments of others, I have become more interested in what I am creating. (It's odd how that happens. )And my curiosity is great. This leads me to consume all kinds of materials, including woo-woo stuff.A weird thing has happened with this shift in attitude. I discovered I set filters on what I look at by looking at what interests me and analyzing myself being interested. In other words, I learn what I like by observing me when I go about getting what I like. One of those filters is being upbeat. I've consumed so much negativity in O-Land (and on TV news programs) that I just don't want any more of it when I go out into the world to soak up other perspectives. And this leads me to a gentle soul named Jonathan Fields who runs a venture called the "Good Life Project." Jonathan puts out interviews with self-help authors and he cuts across a lot of different perspectives. He's highly intelligent. He's well-intended. He likes to introspect and analyze. He's very upbeat with all of it, but in a gentle manner.I resonate. This time, he did not interview anyone, but I believe he did one of his best videos. Ironically, it's one of his shortest ones, too. He talks about how to handle negative people in your life when you are trying to build something. Wise, wise words. For me, I really like the idea of dismissing the opinion of those who are not in the same arena I am.So now to you. What do you do to handle negative people doing a buzz-kill on your projects? Tar and feather them or shoot them outright or both?Michael
dldelancey
I haven't watched the video yet as I'm in the office and don't have my earbuds handy. Firstly, you brought to mind a cocktail that I used to indulge in quite routinely. It was equal parts vodka, peach schnapps, and orange juice. This cocktail is named The Woo-Woo. Secondly, my remedy for naysayers (and other types of toxic personalities) is distance. Just go away.

BaalChatzaf
So now to you. What do you do to handle negative people doing a buzz-kill on your projects? Tar and feather them or shoot them outright or both? MichaelIf their nay is well founded I heed it. If their nay is just a rant with no facts underneath it I ignore it. Life if too short to deal with worthless things.Ba'al Chatzaf.
Michael Stuart Kelly
Bob,Or if the buzz-kill is a sweet person underneath with a big heart (like one Ba'al Chatzaf), you simply make room for him in your life and encourage the good stuff, which can't help but come to the surface.Michael
