Selene
I watched a CSpan presentation, possibly three decades ago on the Future of Work. The speaker told about a factory that he visited at the base of the mountain in Tokyo harbor. He met the owner at the door, who unlocked the factory, There were zero humans inside. It was populated completely by robots. It made a great impression on me.Here we are in a different forum with human interactions, not assembly lines producing widgets...The two-story Henn na Hotel is scheduled to open July 17. It will be promoted with the slogan “A Commitment for Evolution,” Huis Ten Bosch Co. said. The name reflects how the hotel will “change with cutting-edge technology,” a company official said. This is a play on words: “Henn” is also part of the Japanese word for change.Robots will provide porter service, room cleaning, front desk and other services to reduce costs and to ensure comfort. There will be facial recognition technology so guests can enter their rooms without a key.“We will make the most efficient hotel in the world,” company President Hideo Sawada told a news conference. “In the future, we’d like to have more than 90 percent of hotel services operated by robots.”http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2015/01/28/business/huis-ten-bosch-theme-park-get-hotel-staffedrobots/#.VMkYSi5IPIU At least this is Nagasaki, so when the North Koreans target that city, there will be less casualties at this hotel.A... jts
abolishment of w**k by Bob BlackI tried to start an organization for the abolishment of w**k but I was too goddamn lazy to get anything happening.Ayn Rand was a pervert who glorified w**k. All the heroes in her novels w**ked. Ayn Rand was a w**king pervert. You shouldn't even use that word in polite society.Do not allow your children to w**k. Do not allow your children to watch movies that show people w**king. Your children should grow up not knowing what w**k is.If you must w**k, make sure you don't do it in public where people can see you. Especially make sure there are no children around. moralist
If automation is the future of work... then the obvious answer to the future is to do work that cannot be automated. moralist
Well, there's a real career there... operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing automated systems. As a indispensible necessity, are immune from becoming downsized or outsourced. Greg
Selene
Check this baby out!Scientists have developed an octopus-like robot, which can zoom through water with ultra-fast propulsion and acceleration never before seen in man-made underwater vehicles. Most fast aquatic animals are sleek and slender to help them move easily through the water but cephalopods, such as the octopus, are capable of high-speed escapes by filling their bodies with water and then quickly expelling it to dart away.Inspired by this, scientists from the University of Southampton, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology built a deformable octopus-like robot with a 3D printed skeleton with no moving parts and no energy storage device, other than a thin elastic outer hull.It works like blowing up a balloon and then releasing it to fly around the room. However, the 3D printed polycarbonate skeleton inside keeps the balloon tight and the final shape streamlined, while fins on the back keep it going straight. The robot is capable of accelerating up to ten body lengths in less than a second. In recent laboratory tests, the robot accelerated a one kilogram payload up to 6mph in less than a second. This is comparable to a mini-cooper carrying an additional 350kg of weight (bringing the total weight of the car to 1,000kg) accelerating from a standstill to 60mph in one second - underwater.Video in article...http://phys.org/news/2015-02-octopus-robot-ultra-fast-propulsion.html
BaalChatzaf
Video in article...http://phys.org/news/2015-02-octopus-robot-ultra-fast-propulsion.htmlThe Japanese have been very good with vessel design. One of their break through s was a torpedo that could be dropped from a plane and not bury itself in the silt under water of 40 feet in depth or less. This shallow flying torpedo was used very effectively in the attack on Pearl Harbor. I am glad the Japanese are firmly along the ways of peace and commerce.Ba'al Chatzaf
