So, a few years ago, I was standing around with a bunch of other security guards, comparing duty bags. Our supervisor came out and listened for a few minutes. Then he laughed. "You guys, if anything like 9/11 happens again, you are not going to be trapped out in the desert, you're going to be trapped in an elevator!" From his side pocket, he pulled out a 6-inch cat's paw prybar. OK....

Lose the rabbit snare; take the allen wrenches. Leave the fishhooks; bring the screwdrivers. Never mind the Bowie knife; don't forget the roll of dollar coins and quarters. Batteries are more important than bullets.

Good advice, Michael. I don’t plan on being in New York City when a blackout occurs but you never know. I occasionally take the family to see a Broadway play and to shop. And I sometimes go “across the bridge” to DC or Baltimore and north to Philly. My worst experience was with a Pakistani cabby who was eating pungent Chinese food as he drove. Whew!
