The Outsider

Recommended Posts

I suppose I should tell y'all a bit about myself. I graduated from The University of Alabama in 2004 with a BS in Business Management. I have been working in the construction industry with my family's business since then. I am involved in the Libertarian Party of Alabama. I read Atlas Shrugged in 2009, and it changed my life. I'm sure a lot of people say that. I didn't study philosophy in school, and I have just recently began to study it on my own.

Welcome to OL.

I'm looking forward to some good conversations.

Then what are you doing here?

Couldn't help it, I'm suppose I'm channeling Waldorf and Statler a bit today.

Hello all,

My name is Charlie and I am from Alabama. I a new to Objectivism and am still learning the fundamentals. I'm looking forward to some good conversations.

Welcome. I'm new here too, and looking for insights and conversations. I wish you well on your studies. I just got finished listening to the lecture series "Philosophy of Objectivism" by Leonard Peikoff and it blew my mind. This is even after a few years of learning about Objectivism haphazardly. There's so much to learn and to integrate, and also to think about. You must evaluate it all on your own and decide what is right. It's easy to misunderstand too. It must be one of the most misunderstood philosophies ever. However, I'm convinced that it is a work of genius in its essentials.

Welcome.

Southern Alabama?

Interesting observation about the paucity of exposure to Ayn's ideas in a formal educational setting.

Frankly, I believe that is the strength of her ideas.

I was an original organizer of the big "L"ibertarian party in the '70's in NY and, frankly, the National party fucked up any chance of being serious for decades.

Now, with the Tea Party movement, we have an outside chance of clawing back into the political process. However, that has to begin super locally...down to the town counsel and school board level.

Additionally, the Article V movement that was kick started by Mark Levin is an essential piece of having any cnance of decentralizing the administrative state.

Frankly, I fear we are too late, however, until they drag me firing from camo locations, I will do my best to prevail against the marxist fascism. or, sheep like behavior of the unconcerned folks.

If I can help, contact me.

A...

Charlie,

Welcome to OL.

Nah... It's not too late.

The way I see it, the conditions are actually better than in any time in human history to get it right.

Michael

I like your optimism. I will push forward regardless, as giving up is never an option. I understood Dagny's dilemma, we must keep fighting. I'm curious, of which conditions are you speaking? Are you referencing the surging liberty movement in politics?

Charlie,

All of it.

I've known real privation.

Life in the USA is a dream and the folks here just have no idea...

But I have never seen libertarian ideas discussed in the mainstream like they now are. Of course there is a huge pushback, but they're there. Not on the fringe. And they're not going away.

That's the first step to getting them implemented.

The huge push back is a good sign, no one fights you until they fear you. Your'e right about how good we have it here. Those on the left love to complain about the wealthiest 1%, which seems like an arbitrary cutoff, yet worldwide everyone in the US is in the wealthiest 1%. We are still many years away though. Gary Johnson was the most pro-liberty presidential candidate in 2012, yet he received a mere 1% or so of the vote. Not one single senator or member of the house is Libertarian. I think the liberty movement could do what the progressive movement did in the early 20th century, which would still take decades. It seems that patience and perseverance will be key here.

Welcome, Charlie. It's good to see other Southerners around here. (No offense to all the lovely non-Southerners, of course.)

Thanks, I do love the south. Where are you from?

I'm from east TN. I have lived for a number of years on the gulf coast, currently near New Orleans.

verb: patronizing
1.
treat with an apparent kindness that betrays a feeling of superiority.
[Ding, ding, ding...]

Why, I'm sure I have no idea what you mean! {she says using her best Scarlett O'Hara impersonation, which is actually not much of a stretch}

In any case, would you prefer to be treated with an apparent unkindness?
