Long time no post from me...

Hello folks... this is Pam Maltzman; haven't been here in a while. In the last week, I got an e-mail from the Estate of Barbara Branden, notifying me of a memorial for her to be held soon. The event is free except that they are asking for a donation of $15, and there will be refreshments. I believe it is being held at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. This should be an interesting, major social event, in addition to being a way to pay respects to Barbara Branden.

If you wish me to forward a copy of this e-mail, please e-mail me at pbmaltzman@yahoo.com. Or let me know how I can post it here.

We are now located in Kingman, Arizona and won't be able to attend this event, although I'd like to under other circumstances. I was lucky enough to meet Barbara socially several times, and liked her personally as well as admired her writing.

I'm currently job hunting. I brought my medical transcription job with me here in May but have since been terminated. This afternoon I'm also going to register with a local temporary agency for work.

Pam,

It's great to hear from you.

Sorry to get back so late.

Thanks for the info about Barbara.

As to your medical transcription thing, I'm not an expert, but it seems to me if you are willing to do some online grunt-work, you will make out like a bandit.

I did some digging and came up with the following (sorry if I am crossing with what you might have already done--I'm just trying to be helpful):

Medical Transcription Jobs - This is from about.com in a section called "Work At Home Moms." There are several medical transcription opportunities here.

Medical Transcription Jobs - This is from careerbuilder.com. Lots of these say "nationwide" under the distance column, which I believe means work at home.

MTJOBS - This site says it is devoted solely to medical transcriptions. When I looked at "This Week's Jobs" (from the dropdown), several popped up for work at home. It seems even Nuance (the speech to text software people) hires and that is probably a good place to work.

Med-Scribe - This is probably an agency that has a group of freelancers or employees, but my bet is they have a larger stable of freelancers than employees. I worked at several similar organizations when I did translation work in Brazil. I started to apply to some up here with that profile once I came back to the USA, but I was so sick of translating, I just let it slide.

If you want to see a series of rabbit holes to go down and research for opportunities, type in the following words to Google.

government medical transcription jobs

My reasoning is that with the new healthcare law, there is probably a lot of government-encouraged activity in this area. When I typed this in, I got all kinds of results--and many not even government related.

Anyway, good luck to you.

Michael

Welcome back Pam. In the following letter, Barbara summed up my own misgiving about Rand’s male characters. In spite of "the great rift" I considered Barbara Branden a true Objectivist.

Peter Taylor

From 3/10/01 atlantis@wetheliving.com

Re: ATL: RE Godlike‏

My own difficulty with John Galt is not that one COULD NOT be like him, in essence -- that is, a person of great accomplishment who embodies the Objectivist virtues, the apotheosis of the human potential -- but that in certain respects one SHOULD NOT be like him. Galt, like Howard Roark and like Rearden, (Francisco is the exception to this) is a man who deals with people, even people whom he loves, in an almost totally cerebral way; one knows by other means that he is a man of great emotional passion, but one sees it only in his sexual encounter with Dagny. One understands deductively the passionate commitment that has driven him all the years of his strike, but one rarely hears it in his words.

I believe that the emotional repression of Ayn Rand's heroic male characters is one of the reasons that so many of her admirers came to see repression almost as a virtue and not to fight it in themselves.

Ayn Rand further buttressed this error in her male characters by having her people make remarks to the effect that they would never allow a woman they love to see them in pain. This was Rand's own philosophy; she told me that when she first had met Frank O'Connor, she did not tell him of all the miserable and mindless jobs she had to work at -- because she never wanted to face him in pain. It seemed she felt that to show her suffering to the man she loved would be the equivalent of demanding his help, even his pity. Why she believed that, I do not know. And perhaps it was all the hidden and

repressed pain in her life that caused her, in later years, to talk about little except her suffering.

Hi, Michael: Thank you for your good wishes and kind words. I have gone to some of those websites and applied. I hope I find something soon. My skills are still pretty good, even after more than 20 years of doing this kind of work. Peter, thank you also for your reply!
