Hi, I am new to the Forum and want to introduce myself; I am hoping to meet enthused, active practicioners of all the good ideas and make friends. I am hoping to meet a nice young woman here too. I am 33.

Please message me if you are the vital type, ladies and gentleman. And keep recommending Atlas Shrugged to everybody! smile.png

Darrell,

Welcome to OL. Sorry about the bumpy first impression. Kyle is relatively new, too.

Sometimes the language gets rough around the edges here, but rarely do you see the kind of gratuitous sexual innuendo directed at strangers our young newbie presented. He's a good guy (as far as I can tell so far), so maybe he got drunk or somthing...

Kyle,

The newcomer flagged your post in protest. You offended him for real. I, myself am looking at your post and wondering, what gives? So let me ask. What gives?

Michael,

I'm just making an ass out of myself, as I do on occasion.

No, I wasn't drunk. I take full responsibility for my actions.

As for my comment, I didn't intend for it to be taken as a "sexual innuendo". I'm far to innocent for that. I do see how it could have been taken as one, though.

Darrell,

I'm sorry for writing that comment. I should know better than to write those kind of comments to new members (or any member, for that matter).

My comment (and behavior) shouldn't be taken as representative of this site, its content, or its members' attitudes.

Mike,

I intended it as a joke. But a newcomer wouldn't understand the humor, so I shouldn't have made it.

He seems to have taken it seriously.

Darrell,

You are under a misconception about how OL works.

We don't control each other's behavior here by private messages, constant deletes, "nudges" to the authority about what is better for everyone, clique control, etc.

And I am not much of an authoritatrian. I'm more like a traffic cop.

If you are looking for a place where you can manipulate things behind the scenes, I am poor quality material for that. I have received about 10 private messages--including flagged posts--in the last 6 months. Four of them have been yours in under 24 hours.

To the substance, I didn't see the need to delete Kyle's message (nor do I see it had it stayed as it was). If you are a person of goodwill, I believe you will notice that he did so himself. In other words, Kyle has good character and a good heart.

I see no reason whatsoever to delete Mike's post.

So you see, I disagree with you. I do not believe that these matters are best handled off line. I'm more of a transparency dude.

If you don't like it, I suggest you find somewhere else where people are more habituated to bad-mouthing each other behind their backs. However, if you think you can handle yourself within the OL spirit, which means everyone speaks for themselves and speaks what's on their minds openly, you are more than welcome.

You decide. We ain't changing here. (I normally don't speak for everyone, but I feel pretty safe on that score in this case.)

Here is an unsolicited recommendation. Try my way. I believe it would be good for your life. I know that my life got a hell of a lot simpler once I decided only to speak to people to their faces about personal matters that concern them. And here's an unsolicited extention. Never write something privately about someone that you would not own up to in front of that person out in the open. That's not only smart in today's electronically connected world where privacy has flown the coop, it is also good for your self-honesty muscle.

People here on OL have good minds and good hearts. That's the default evaluation for criticizing them for me to take this stuff seriously. I don't see any evidence that you have identified that fact, that you have even tried to identify that fact. I do see your backstage disapproval.

Think about this. What if I'm worse than those you disapprove of?

Heh. For some reason, that sounds about right.

If I sound harsh, sorry about that. But that's the way it is. You probably have a good mind and the potential to do great things in life. I hate to see you throw it away on this crap.

Michael -

Well, I disagree with your advice about how I should live my life with policies of the kind of transparency you recommend; it is for such problems that develop when one does that that the behaviors and concepts of general privacy, discretion, and exercising proper judgement about what rationally to say to whom in what contexts exist. However, I see how you are handling things on this site, and for now it is my plan simply to chat with people here.

Darrell,

I can't resist.

You might want to work on your passive case, too.

That's quite a mouthful...

Darrell, I don't care what everyone else says about you. I think you're alright.

Dglgmut,

He's probably a good kid.

But notice the actions, not the words. He came out of nowhere and told me how to run the forum (since it was so bad), so I came back out of nowhere and told him how to run his life (since it was...)

:)

Ayn Rand said, "Judge and prepare to be judged."

For some reason, newcomers to Rand get all high and everything on the "judge" part. But they are not nearly as enthusiastic on the "be judged" part.

I wonder why, I wonder...

:)

FWIW, Darrell has been on ObjectivismOnline for a little while. Right around the election he posted a birther story from 2008 with the dates removed: the Supreme Court is to intervene next Monday to prevent the imposter’s inauguration, yada yada yada, all you had to do was google a phrase or two from it to find it’s long debunked bunk. I replied in one of my more sarcastic tones, maybe you’ve noticed that birtherism is one of those things I have zero respect for. Of course I gave a link to snopes or wherever else you could find the original. Very soon the thread was deleted, within hours. Whether this was at his request I don’t know for sure, though I certainly assume so.

The point being: OL’s newest newbie has a history of being both high maintenance and um, how to put it nicely: in error. I know OL doesn’t have the janitorial staff on hand to keep him from slipping on his own messes, so you do well to warn him. As I’ve written on OO once or twice, in response to the occasional OL disparagement: like with better hi-fi stereo speakers, here you get the higher highs and lower lows. If your ears can’t hack it, there are other places, with rather compressed dynamic ranges and tinnier sound, but, suit yourself. However I would suggest Darrell avoids what we around here call the SLOP trough. Here’s a good representation of that wretched hive of scum and villainy, while carrying forward the audio-quality metaphor:

"I hate you, and I berate you..." now that's KASS!!!!

So that's the OO culture? Go crying to the moderator at the drop of a hat? No wonder posts are deleted--to shut the crybabies up. I think the last time I was in a crib I was a 2 yo. I do remember twice crying for Mommy. I had breathing problems because of my hay fever. She rescued me! Thanks, Mom!

No respect for birthers? Really?

You sent the schoolmarm into thin-skinned hysterics when you posted the tin foil hat in his post on the subject.

That was hilarious by the way.

Allow me to jump in, simply because I was not invited.

Back in 1966, I was a member of Young Americans for Freedom founded by William F. Buckley but since gone to seed. As I was entering algebra class and another math class was leaving, a friend of mine handed me Anthem. After that, I read The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and took a Basic Principles of Objectivism course on tape from the Nathaniel Branden Institute. That was 1966-1967. So, I have been at this a while...

Ah yes, that was a fun one. I found it quick, here's a link:

http://forum.objectivismonline.com/index.php?showtopic=23357entry291392

The one I'm talking about came later though, and the whole thread was deleted so you'll just have to take my word for it.

BTW, one of the things I've noticed about OO moderators is that they help out fundies who've made asses of themselves. For example, the Unmioved Miover started that tin foil hat thread with the title, all caps: "Obama's birth certificate **was** faked". They later changed it to how it reads now. I wonder if they'd be so courteous to me if I somehow blew it. With this forum software one thing you can't change is a thread title once you've hit post. A moderator can, but not a user. I know I've mispelled a word once or twice in a title, but it's never been anything disastrous.

My boss suggested I read this here Atlas Shrugged book, hint hint. I always saw it in the sprawl and mess of his office. I was afraid to throw it away, so I took it home, and he didn't notice it was gone.

I had seen its Gone With the Wind doorstoppiness in second hand bookstores for years, but it wasn't until I read L Ron Hubbard's Battlefield Earth that I was willing to open up Atlas Shrugged with intent to reach the end.

I compared the two books in a commentary slash threadkiller comment to a thread at the old listserv (now on Yahoo somewhere) :

Objectivism a cult? No, probably not, in my opinion. But maybe anotherway of looking at the Cult/Rand meme: could we find cult-ishtendencies within the present body of Objectivists? Maybe yes. MaybeShermer simply found a ready-made fit for his devotional tendenciesafter he gave up god . . .

With regard to Rand's magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged, in which she laidout concrete examples of her philosophy in action: Oi. Fantasy. Rant.Haranguing dialogue. Characters with the depth and realism ofSkeletor, Lex Luthor, Bizarro Superman, She-Ra and Wonder Woman. So far I have only read the first 650,000 of its 800,000 pages. At themoment, as I struggle through the chapter "The Utopia of Greed," itreminds me most of L Ron Hubbard's "Battlefield Earth," with Rand'smonsters slightly more horrid and evil than Hubbard's nightmarishslavedrivers, the titanic struggle between good and evil only slightlymore titanic . . . mind you, Hubbard's book is also slightly longer,at 1,000,000 pages of turgid, pulpy, entertaining hooey.

And oh yeah, hey Newcomer. A certain amount of freakiness is tolerated here at OL, but on the whole we none of us show mercy unless necessary. Beware the complete freedom of the tongue here -- and have fun.

Our parent figure is busy with his life and generally gives little thought to coddling, but his red lines are well-marked. Start with the guideline threads and if you want us to get acquainted with you, then do some homework and get acquainted with 'us' ... use your whole mind, not just your panic button, and you will be fine.

This is the Initiation Stage for you, in case you hadn't noticed.

If you have a link to my Initiation I'd be appreciative; I've forgotten all about it except I was allowed to keep my clothes on. In fact, it was insisted I keep them on. (Something about frightening the livestock.)

Carol, there is a new female member, who penned a beautifully snarky comment. I sent her a PM letting her know of your existence. Hope she comes back to read and post: Acerbic_Critique / M Anderson Eastman
