Selene
Now there are places to critique his assumption about individual man, however, his other ideas are quite applicable. The emergence of “new media” and “social media” — it has all looked fairly revolutionary, the beginning of something entirely new. But, when you step back and consider it, these innovations mark perhaps just an acceleration of a trend that began long ago — one that Marshall McLuhan, the famed communication theorist, first outlined in the 1960s. The vintage clip above gives you a feel for this, and McLuhan himself appears at around the 2:45 minute mark. As you watch this video, you start to realize how prescient McLuhan was, and how social media is almost the logical fulfillment of the trend he saw emerging. We’ve added this piece to our big collection of 275 Cultural Icons, which features great writers, artists and thinkers speaking in their own words. http://www.openculture.com/2010/04/marshall_mcluhan_the_world_is_a_global_village_.html

Brant Gaede
Presley was all right but he sang for teenage girls, not boys. The gals cared about those hips, not the guys. In WWII guys in the military hated Sinatra singing up to the girls while they had to serve, fight and even die. At least Presley spent two years in the army. Sinatra calculated serving in the army during the war would have cost him $200,000 in bookings. So he stayed home and sang--to the left-behind girls. Over the years the guys sort of forgave him as they liked his crooning and incredible stage presence for they came home and married those gals.--Brantafterall, Frank got the money and they got the sex

Selene
McLuhan on the global village...you know the one Evita's brain said you need to raise a child? In Understanding Media (xii-xiii) he put the matter this way: …since the inception of the telegraph and radio, the globe has contracted, spatially, into a single large village. Tribalism is our only resource since the electro-magnetic discovery. Moving from print to electronic media we have given up an eye for an ear.Extremely perceptive man. I was very glad I had a professor that studied under him in grad school. On “The Medium is the Message”Each medium, independent of the content it mediates, has its own intrinsic effects which are its unique message. The message of any medium or technology is the change of scale or pace or pattern that it introduces into human affairs. The railway did not introduce movement or transportation or wheel or road into human society, but it accelerated and enlarged the scale of previous human functions, creating totally new kinds of cities and new kinds of work and leisure. This happened whether the railway functioned in a tropical or northern environment, and is quite independent of the freight or content of the railway medium. (Understanding Media, NY, 1964, p. 8)His language can be a little "sticky," however, well worth thinking through.A...
