Truth about the Atlas Shrugged Part 3 Kickstarter

If you enter "Atlas Shrugged Part 3 kickstarter" in your search engine, you will find that the mass media bloggers from Time to Salon and beyond are having a great time not stating the facts.

The goal of the kickstarter was to put $250,000 into the advertising budget of the movie. The purpose of the campaign was to let people get involved.

The producers did not need the quarter million dollars -- but money is always nice to have. What they offered was a hierarchy of values based on your willingness and ability to buy into the process. For $35 you get a special T-shirt. For $1000 you get your name listed in the roll-up of the credits at the end of the movie. You can buy a signed film cell, or a specially endorsed DVD, and several other mementos. These are vanity gifts, indeed, and if you want one, you can still buy one. The deadline is October 23.

If I had the money I would donate it with the proviso that they do something, anything, with the Galt torture scene. I don't know what could be done but that scene is just too comic-book for a series that has proceeded in a somewhat normal cinematic fashion.

Ragnar Danneskjöld finally 'coming to the rescue' through the window like a true comic-book hero ...

Casting session for Atlas Shrugged Part 3:

Casting Director:What we're looking for is a Taylor Schilling type.

David Kelley: Who is she?

John Aglialoro: Never mind. I mean, actresses who are career-driven like Dagny and we can afford. Not that we need the money to pay them.

DK: And who can demonstrate that they are their own highest values ...

CD: Hahaha, every actress we'll ever see is her own highest value, don't you worry about that..

DK: That is encouraging, but can we be sure they have read the book and understand its full implications?

CD: Um, sure. Yes, we can do that. (Makes note to self: "Brunette, not dyslexic,---rehire that nerd tutor ASAP) .....

The notoriously lecherous casting directors could no doubt do much better than bothering with AS 3. My understanding is that most movies with big time actors, directors, etc. have production costs of well over $100 million not the paltry amount that the Atlas Shrugged movies have been made with.

I have admiration for John Aglialoro's dedication, and his willingness to put his own millions into it, and I think what has come out on that very slim budget is about as good as can be expected (although changing casts was not a wise idea). If the trilogy had the funding that Lord of the Rings had, the results would likely show it..

Many of us had said from the beginning that Atlas Shrugged could not be adapted to movie format, and still have it retain any amount of the novel's emotional and intellectual impact.

Atlas Casting office, good morning.,... You're HER agent? She's a big Rand fan? Oh, I could tell that, great sense of life, the greatest... wants to show her range, of course,.it's obvious she has a great range... would need to play a little older, maybe... or we could work on the script a little...no, unfortuntately she can't meet the author and express her great admiration, uh...how soon can we get together and make this happen? It's gonna be a breakout role in a classic , uh, classical CLASSIC! And on a personal level, this IS JUST HUGE FOR ME, I mean it, I am Miss Cyrus's biggest fan!

I.ve only watched Part I and my main memory is how good the actress playing Lilian was, she was the real-deal |Lil straight from the page but believable.\

Dagny is really a difficult if not impossible character to bring to life. But there are so many brilliant actresses and most of them unemployed. Fingers crossed something special turns up on 3.

The defects of the film have little to do with its budget (Part 1 cost $20 million). As a fan of independent film, each year I see dozens of films made with far, far less while still managing to be beautifully shot, edited and acted.

Film is a visual medium, and the creators of Parts 1 and 2 have apparently never encountered the idea that in order to engage the viewer, one must show more than tell.

Atlas the Book is a tapestry of arresting images, startling contrasts, and larger than life heroes. Atlas the Movie is flat, lifeless and thoroughly ordinary.

There is more drama in a puppet show.

The John Galt Speech, with a few of the events leading up to it, would have made a sucessfull movie IMO.

Title, of course would be "This is John Galt Speaking".

Run time: 3 hrs

Get well known actors

Have a $100 million + budget.

I would like Keifer Sutherland as JG

Angelina Jolie as Dagny.

'Hello, Lou? CD here, just confirming the meet, I'm so pumped... oh, you looked it up huh? Um, can't you just tell her that Miss Rand is unavailable, she's out of town,,, I know, she's holed up writing in her secret hideout, but she'll come out after the shooting wraps up! And then... hey, what if Dame Helen could do a real life reprise??...this project got legs, Louie!

Angie J. has long been interested in portraying Dagny and tho not the physical type Rand shows us (those lips!) she is such a good actor she could do it. Who knows, she could make it her next humanitarian project -- stranger things have happened.

You know, I think it is time for Randians to lay down the "Misunderstood, misrepresented, smeared, alone against the world" cross.

Rand has been read, critically examined, biographized by scholars and contemporaries alike, continuously for half a century after her death. Her ideas have permeated the political landscape and her legacy is now unassailable.

It is unseemly for her philosophical inheritors to proclaim themselves or worse, Rand, as victims.

They will if and when the misrepresentations and smears stop, but I doubt the latter will ever happen.

I am not sure about that. When The New Individualist ran its "Hollywood" cover I bought ten copies. But, truly, "The Architect I Wanted to Be" by Jim Carrie is not the stuff of legend. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were touted for Hank Rearden and Dagny Taggart, but it was clearly just publicity hype, as they next ran off to behave like the Film Actors Guild in Team America.

The negative publicity is just great. Atlas Shrugged cannot be ignored. That was why I started this thread and others like it on RoR, 4RandFans, and Objectivism Online. Predictably, except for RoR, (and now Merlin), the replies were all negative. Who needs enemies?

I am taking it down to the wire to be able to buy in for as much as I can. My wife said that if I get a contract that covers the grand, she'll front me the money to be listed in the closing credits. It's an incentive. Short of that, I can always get the special edition T-Shirt.

All buyers at any level will be listed on the website. This is an opportunity to put your money where your mouth is.

To be on-site is $3500. To be in the film - and you cannot be in SAG/AFTA - is $5000.

By my "interpretation of the Guard" you mean Dagny's killing the guard outside the State Science Institute torture chamber. We already had that discussion (more than once over the years) and I did not have an opinion. What's your opinion of the man selling cigarettes in the Taggart Terminal? Same question. No answer.

  • Why does Dwight Sanders build and Dagny Taggart fly "monoplanes" when biplanes were obsolete at the start of World War II?

  • What do you think of the push button starter in Hank Rearden's roadster? Surely a millionaire could afford a new car... or it is a priceless antique? You know, truth the tell, the reason that James Bond drives an Aston Martin and John Steed of The Avengers has a Vauxhall, a Bentley, and a Rolls-Royce is that like chocolate rationing, evidence of poverty caused by socialism and war are everywhere in Britain. Maybe Hank Rearden faces the same problems. And does he use toothpaste or toothpowder?

  • Perhaps more to the point, what do you think of the fact that political socialism depends on people first being willingly exploited by their own families?

Yes, of course I mean how you would portray that security guard in that situation, and it though I spoke lightly, it was actually a serious observation. You know the duties and more importantly, the underlying rationales, of your job. You know the plot of Atlas. You know and have discussed the many, many ways in which that scene has been interpreted . I don't know if you have any acting experience but sincerely I would really like it if you played that part. (Full disclosure, I think the whole scene should be cut however, it is too over the top).
