The Psychology of Self-Esteem 30 CD Lecture Course

Recommended Posts

I recently listened to Nathaniel Branden's audio-lecture course on the psychology of self-esteem. I am pretty sure I remember hearing Dr. Branden say he had a lot of self-esteem in reference to lecturing, since he has been giving lectures on psychology/philosophy successfully for so many years. I'm wondering if anyone has an idea where he might have said this in the lecture course? For some reason, I take mental note of things said and then when I need the source I cannot find it.

Part of the reason I am asking is because recently I've been pondering and debating with a friend if self-esteem as a concept can be compartmentalized and applied to particulars or if it is a concept that only applies in a holistic or general sense. For example: is it possible for a person have self-esteem in regard to driving but not dancing? Also, how is self-esteem different from confidence?

Looking forward to the replies,

DA

At the age of 25 in 1969 I quit smoking and that decision has been a source of self-esteem to me ever since.

Self-esteem is both global and local. Your example speaks to that: one can have self-efficacy, an aspect of self-esteem, in a single action (I'm good at driving), yet lack self-efficacy in another realm (I'm terrible at dancing). One can also have global self-esteem (Although I'm terrible at dancing, I know I can learn it).

Regarding confidence, here's Branden's definition of Self-Esteem:

A. Confidence in one's ability to think, confidence in one's ability to cope with the basic challenges of life

B. Confidence in one's right to be successful and happy, the feeling of being worthy, deserving, entitled to assert one's needs and wants, achieve one's values, and enjoy the fruits of one's efforts

So self-esteem and confidence are inter-related.

What?!! No fire at your fingertips? How unheroic of you to quit smoking.

All kidding aside, it was a good move for you. I quit smoking cigarettes back in 1962 (ending a two pack a day habit) and I give up tobacco entirely in 1999. I have not regretted it one bit.

That book came out in what, 1968? His recent work reveals more. Much more.

Recently, he has sent a broadcast message. Seen it?

err...what 30 CD lecture course entitled The Psychology of Self-esteem? Offered by who? Where? Please elaborate.

Branden recorded a 20 lecture course that was available on tape cassette through Audio Forum, and may also have been sold through the previous incarnation of Laissez Faire Books. However, the actual title was "New Lectures on the Psychology of Self-Esteem," and was recorded in LA back in the early nineteen-seventies. This course was not the same as NBI's "Principles of Objectivist Psychology" (most of which appeared in print format as The Psychology of Self-Esteem in 1970). The "New Lectures" course was also not the same in content to the earlier book mentioned above.

AudioForum has since offered many/most/all of the individual lectures that originally made up tne "New Lectures on The Psychology of Self-Esteem," but in repackaged formats and groupings under different titles. First on tape, now mostly available on CD. Is this the course that you are referring to?

Hi Jerry (and others),

I've been communicating with Leigh Branden in regard to offering this series on my website. Do you have any flyers (an outline or description) or detailed information relating to the lecture series? It is a 20 lecture course that was given in the 70s, so I assume it is the New Lectures on the Psychology of Self-Esteem series. I am hoping to make the lectures available within the next few weeks, maybe sooner. Any information would be helpful, including pictures from the event.

Thanks so much,

Randall

P.S. I'm also curious if anyone has a cassette tape of Branden speaking on Anarchy. If you do, I'd like to obtain a copy. I can request written permission from Leigh Branden for you to provide me with the material.
