In a few hours it will be sundown, the end of the month of Elul and the beginning of the month of Tishre 5771. So here is a wish that your year which follows will be a better year than this one that is ending.

I will now go and sound the shofar. The next sound you hear is me hitting the notes wrong.

Coming year? Shouldn't we acknowledge the Gregorian Calendar as more rational than the Hebrew Calendar as it more accurately reflects the relative position of the earth in its orbit?

Sure, if we wanted to be petty and make a "point."

I just wish folks that I respect on OL who happen to still adhere to certain cultural and religious observances that I also respect them.

As solar calendars go the Gregorian is just fine. The Hebrew calendar is basically lunar because of the prescribed holiday times given in Scripture. However unlike the Islamic calendar which is strictly lunar the Hebrew calendar corrects itself for seasons by adding a "leap month" every 2.6 years on the average. This puts but the 28 days lost by purely lunar reckoning.

Why should I respect irrationality? Logic trumps tradition and if I want to make a point I shouldn't let respect of ancient traditions get in my way.

When you're young you don't know enough about rational/irrational to support this particular application of the principle. That's why college student hot-headedness is culturally tolerated and not called "irrational." We know you are correct and maybe in a way you do not, in your attitude, but know it's ironical. I see you are young in heart and still in the brain--don't foist it off; it's wonderful!

It is astounding how ignorant that the "news" media and a Presidential candidate and his staff could possibly be.

However, here is the first...FAIR WARNING----

Tribune Media’s flagship TV station WGN-TV Chicago has apologized for including an offensive image in a Tuesday night report on the Yom Kippur holiday.

The station’s 9 p.m. newscast aired a report on the holiday, the day of atonement that is the holiest day of the year for Jews, that included an image of the star of David with “Jude” in the center. That symbol was used as the badge that Jews in concentration camps and elsewhere in Germany were forced to wear during the Nazi regime.
