He shows that "energy barriers" exist in chemical processes that slow down the effects of the second law of thermodynamics, which says that energy will of itself and its own nature tend to disperse into larger and larger sets of micro states. It is for this reason that most of the combustible organic materials we commonly use do not burst into flame readily. Depends on who you are and what you are about.
