NOW, AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME….

I went to a used furniture store yesterday and found a reasonably priced and very comfy overstuffed recliner, a great reading chair to replace my broken La-Z-Boy that I had to discard four months ago. It was delivered today, along with four good books on the history of political thought. I placed the books on a small table next to the chair, along with a snack and soft drink, and lost myself for three hours. Before long I reflected: “Now, at this moment in time, I am doing exactly what I want to do. Even if I had a billion dollars this is what I would be doing.”

Perfect moments are rare, so they should be savored.

....and then, it suddenly dawned upon you  remembering that newspaper article stating that "used furniture" may be infested with bedbugs!:o Jumping up, you run to the kitchen to get that spray can of Raid, but then stop, remembering that the government "Safety Nazis" have outlawed the only effective bedbug killer, DDT...

what to do? Springing into action, you seal-up the chair in a super-size Baggy and FedEx it to the EPA lounge, for their resting pleasure,...with the built-in surprise!

George,

Because of your post, I went out and bought a new chair.

Not a recliner, but the one I use at my computer. My old one was killing me.

I haven't reached your level of Nirvana yet, but life is suddenly a whole lot better.

Michael

Congratulations on your new chair. I purchased a high quality office chair some years ago, even though I couldn't really afford it. The cheap chair I had been using was uncomfortable, especially through long stretches of writing. I figured that since I spend a third or more of my life at a computer, a comfortable chair was a necessity more than a luxury. At least that's how I rationalized my purchase. 8-)

George, your OP expressing utter contentment communicates a feeling that has often inspired poets;;" a loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thou"...and "hyacinths to feed my soul" down to "This Magic Momen": and such . Have you ever written any poetry? Most writers are guilty of it at some point in their lives.

I've never tried to write poetry -- no talent for it --except for some occasional doggerel. I did, however, get something (I don't know what to call it) published in a small circulation literary zine during the 1970s. Intended to express my frustration with the mechanics of "scholarly" writing, it went like this:

My goal as a writer:

To write a single piece

Without a single footnote.*

*Failed again

People are not constructed to sit up straight in chairs for long stretches. The ancient Romans did not have chiropractors I bet, because they did so much reclining on couches.

This is why I use a standing desk I constructed at work for my writing, but I'll sit and read to rest periodically.
