Traffic Detention

The discussion policies on OL did not spring from my head like Athena from Zeus. Nor did I copy them from anywhere. I started with what I imagined was right and evolved over time according to experience.

Here is how one policy emerged, illustrated metaphorically.

After countless forum discussions, I came to the conclusion that I did not want certain people around--like those who always caused topics to shut down due to their aggressive idiocy.

Here is an example of someone who brought out the identical emotion in me. Except in this case, there is an extremely satisfying end.

Too bad you can't do that on a forum.

Adam,

That guy was drunk and playing gotcha like a moron.

I have to say, I enjoyed the real-deal gotcha in the end. And I'm no fan of police violence...

The slurred words would be probable cause...

and being a moron also counts...

That guy may have been impaired but how could he be so stupid? The next video showing the dogs biting the bumper off of a cop car was interesting. I would have shot or run over the dogs.

In today's world, you would be Michael Vick's "celli," a.k.a. cell mate...

If I were on duty and a dog was keeping me from doing my job, did not heed the car horn or the fact that the vehicle was moving, and bit the bumper off the car, then I would consider the biting dogs to be hazardous. What if a little kid was walking down the street and just watching and the dogs attacked him? If a human were waving a gun around but had not shot me yet but was threatening to shoot me, like those attacking dogs were doing, isn't that initiating force, and wouldn't you shoot first in retaliation? I know it is a stretch, but think of all the times it is retaliation to a threat when a person shoots first. Police officers, bank guards, airport guards, body guards, and even a guard dog on its property, should not allow themselves or the public to be hurt if they can stop it from occurring. Should it be considered moral to NOT strike first with a nuclear weapon, or conventionally, if a country were on the verge of an invasion or a strike? It is a dilemma.

Peter:

I understand your approach.

Would your approach to the dog(s), as a potential prime priority threat, change if you had a light secondary weapon that would effectively disable the animal without killing it?

Of course, I would not kill a biting dog if I could say shazaam and make it stop biting. You led me to that answer, didn't you Gomer? I am not a fan of dogs. I only have cats, foxes, and four raccoons and hummingbirds passing by to sample my six feeders. I think I will refill four tomorrow since the air traffic is slowing down. I will need to look at last year's calendar to see when they stopped coming. Milwaukee Hummer flight to tower, our ETA is 0915. Roger Bird, use runway five niner two. Four refueling stations are available with high octane, exactly 25 percent sugar water. If you have ever had a hummingbird near your head, they sound like a giant bumblebee.
