This is a variation of chess invented by Bobby Fischer called Fischer Random Chess. It has 960 starting positions instead of one. FRC has the following advantages over normal chess.

1. It cuts down on pre-arranged games.

Fischer made the accusation that most modern chess games at the world level are prearranged. He said that most of Kasparov's games were prearranged. That means the moves are decided in advance like in professional wrestling. Maybe Fischer was crazy but it would be difficult to prearrange a game if you don't know the starting position until like 2 minutes before the game begins. It is not likely that anyone will prearrange 960 games to play one game.

2. It cuts down on the memorization.

It is normal in a world championship match for the first 10 or 15 or 20 moves on each side to be 'preparation' which means memorization. Each side tries to come up with 'ideas' or innovations with the help of a team and computers. As chess openings become more and more analyzed it becomes more difficult to come up with innovations and the innovations have to be deeper in the opening.

Fischer went so far as to say that the old chess is 'played out'. He said the the hardest part of chess is the opening and after the opening the game tends to almost play itself (at Fischer's level of skill). But the opening has been analyzed by millions of chess players for hundreds of years and now by computers.

Anyway June 28, 2014 the first TCEC FRC tournament begins. The top 8 engines will battle it out for the TCEC (Thoresen Chess Engines Competition) Fischer Random Chess championship.
