Just started the book Grain Brain, #1 NY Times Best seller, by David Perlmutter M.D., who writes I"m here to tell you that the fate of your brain is not in your genes. It's not inevitable..... It's in the food you eat" (pg. 4)

As a famous Vulcan often said, "fascinating".

Sounds like more support for the paleo diet. No question in muly mind: excess sugar & carbs are the primary killer of Americans, the primary cause of CVD, cancer, diabetes, and dementia.

Mike E, how did trying to eat fewer egg whites work for you?

Dean,

Haven't tried it. Still eat the whole egg (about 3-4/day). Fish several times a week. Intermittent fasting during the week, whatever Karen wants to eat on the weekends. Interesting discussion on nutrition on strongfirst: http://www.strongfirst.com/topic/pttp-eating-and-carbohydrates/

A couple of books I hadn't heard of, i.e.: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1451699158/ Looks interesting.

This too (not from the discussion): http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/719423

A friend's wife is dying of cancer. I've been trying to find anything at all that might give a glimmer of hope.

Mikee,

I eat egg whites often. They are quite bland so I put a slice of Bordens Fat Free American Cheese, split into pieces in the skittle & cooked with them. Only 3 grams of carbs per slice & it makes a world of difference taste-wise. Sure, the cheese is "processed", but the small amount used shouldn't pose a problem. A fair trade-off imo.-J

A friend's wife is dying of cancer. I've been trying to find anything at all that might give a glimmer of hope.

The options seem to be:

- cut

- poison

- burn

- various forms of magic (example: religion)

- fasting (doesn't work on cancer altho sometimes it works on noncancer tumors)

- overdosing on nutrition (Gerson therapy, "Chris beat cancer")

Gerson therapy (essentially nutrition therapy) is illegal in the USA so that's why they go to Mexico. You can find tons of info about Gerson therapy by a simple search on "Gerson therapy".

Gerson therapy began with Dr. Max Gerson who had headaches and wanted a remedy for headaches. By experimenting with diet he found something that worked. Then it was discovered that this "headache diet" worked for other things besides headache. By a life long process of experimenting Dr. Max Gerson improved the Gerson therapy until it was almost what it is today. Dr. Max Gerson looked upon Gerson therapy as a work in progress, not something written in stone, probably capable of more improvements in the light of modern nutritional knowledge.

After the death of Dr. Max Gerson, the Gerson therapy community was taken over by his daughter, Dr. Charlotte Gerson. You can find lots of videos of Charlotte Gerson lecturing about the therapy. She made a few minor changes, such as she took out the calf liver.

There seems to be a split in the Gerson therapy community between those who take it as written in stone and those who see it as a work in progress capable of improvement in the light of modern nutritional knowledge. I can understand why a Gerson therapy doctor might be reluctant to experiment with the life of a patient when he already has something that has a history of working.

The orthodox medical profession says there is no evidence that Gerson therapy works etc, etc. They say Dr. Max Gerson refused to publish studies in respected journals. Charlotte's version of that story is her father did submit articles for publication but they were rejected.

Gerson therapy is borderline impossible to do full strength without help. It takes lots of work. It's like a full time job. Besides, the patient is supposed to be resting. And the instructions are detailed and demanding. Do one thing wrong and the result can be failure.

They claim a success rate of about 30% for terminal cancer, about 90% for some kinds of cancer. I imagine their success rates are affected by the fact that they reject patients that they figure they can't help. It is said (maybe this is not accurate information) that chemotherapy has a success rate of about 3%, and what they mean by success is the cancer is killed but it comes back worse.

Patients who have had chemotherapy prior to Gerson therapy have less chance of success. This is because the Gerson therapy must overcome the chemotherapy (poison).

Charlotte Gerson says: "You cannot heal selectively." Gerson therapy is not a cancer only therapy. Nutrition is nutrition; it is not a cancer only thing. Charlotte Gerson said type 2 diabetes can be reversed in 5 to 8 days. That's even better than Dr. Fuhrman who takes about 30 days to reverse type 2 diabetes.

About quackery:

A quack is supposed to be any doctor whose doctoring is not base on science. Gerson therapy is said to be quackery. But it is based on the science of nutrition and it is based on experimenting. Dr. Max Gerson kept what worked and rejected what did not work. Chemotherapy (trying to improve health by means of poison) is, I assume, based on science. But what science is it based on? Not health science. I am confused.

I suspect that what they usually really mean by 'quack' is competition. If they can't compete in a free market, they ban the competition by force of law under the guise of protecting people against fraud.

Dean,

I'm unfamiliar with the Paleo diet.

I'm 68 pages into Perlmutter's book. There's so much more to the book than diet. An up to date education in neurology: what it is and what affects it (types of food). Tough for me to put down.

Check out some pages:

I already provided some of it here. I doubt you are interested. Gerson therapy will never pass peer review in a medical journal that gets most of its revenue from advertising drugs. But chemotherapy is an emperor without any clothes.

Gerson therapy was developed incrementally by trial and error. For example they found that all oils are pro-cancer except flaxseed oil. Flaxseed oil is the only oil that is anti-cancer. Some things work or don't work and they don't know why.

This is the schedule.

gerson-schedule.jpg

The nutrition part makes sense to me. The coffee enemas part seems weird to me.

There are 4 kinds of juice: orange, green, carrot/apple, carrot.

The green juice is the only one that is complexicated.

gerson_green2.png

There is it seems a mysterious trial and error reason for everything in this recipe.

I'm very poor at following complexicated diet instructions. So today I had me my own version of green juice: kale, beet, carrot. And it wasn't green. Kale is super-lettuce and is perhaps the most powerful of all veggies and is highly esteemed by Dr. Fuhrman.

Well I just finished "Grain Brain"

To summarize, that is, give my take on it:

You will probably know, after having read the book, more about the brain than most primary care physicians... how it functions, how foods affect it and the consequences that follow...the good, the bad & the deadly. The brain is essentially the Commander-in-Chief of the body. Take care of it & you will live healthier, longer. The foods we eat are of paramount importance.

Various tests we should have now are also discussed in detail. The gluten sensitivity test will be done first.

Sugar, carbohydrates & gluten are the enemies, the poison. Lots of notable studies to support that are referenced.

Proteins & fats are the groups of foods that are essential to our brain & overall health. The types are discussed in detail.

A great read.

I plan to lay it on my primary care physician at our next meeting & state which tests & want done and the food plan I am now on.

Should be interesting.

Yoo Hoo??????? Our bodies run on sugar. Look up adonine triphosphat and see how human metabolism -really works-. It is mucj more useful than Folk Medicine and Folk Nutritiion.

Metabolism diagrammed:

From the wiki article on metabolism:

The most important carbohydrate is glucose, a simple sugar (monosaccharide) that is metabolized by nearly all known organisms. Glucose and other carbohydrates are part of a wide variety of metabolic pathways across species: plants synthesize carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water byphotosynthesis storing the absorbed energy internally, often in the form of starch or lipids. Plant components are consumed by animals and fungi, and used as fuel for cellular respiration. Oxidation of one gram of carbohydrate yields approximately 4 kcal of energy and from lipids about 9 kcal. Energy obtained from metabolism (e.g. oxidation of glucose) is usually stored temporarily within cells in the form of ATP.[1] Organisms capable of aerobic respiration metabolize glucose and oxygen to release energy with carbon dioxide and water as byproducts.

Without glucose we die.

"The process by which our cells accept & utilize glucose is an elaborate one. The cells don't just suck up glucose passing by them in the bloodstream. This vital sugar molecule has to be allowed into the cell by the hormone insulin, which is produced in the pancreas......But when cells are constantly exposed to high levels of insulin as a result of a persistent intake of glucose (much of which is caused by an over- consumption of hyper-processed foods filled with refined sugars that spike insulin levels beyond a healthy limit" David Perlmutter, M.D. Pg. 28, Grain Brain

There's a lot to digest in the book I just read.

Just thought I'd add the above, in.

Nice to have a working brain throughout our entire lives.

I've had loved ones with Alzheimer's. 70+ in age. It's brutal. Your rational faculty is gone.....and you can have it for years.

Sorry, but it must be pointed out that Alzheimers is a disease, the most common form of dementia, with no known causes(most likely genetic) and no cure.

"Mental stimulation, exercise and a balanced diet have been suggested as ways to delay cognitive symptoms (though not brain pathology) in healthy older individuals, but there is no conclusive evidence supporting an effect. It is classed as a neurodegenerative disorder."[Wikipedia]

It is indeed a terrible, wasting disease. My sympathies to anyone who knows someone close who has it.

Tony,

Prevention is the key. It's not inevitable. You can die without ever having experienced it because you took precautions.

Too much carbs can have issues, but surely having some amount of carbs in the human diet is important: Given that our evolutionary history goes back to tree shrews, and that we are not 100% carnivores. I don't think you should worry about limiting consumption of green leafy vegetables. Fruit: they do have some sugar/carbs, but nothing like refined cereal, you'd have to eat a lot of them to get into trouble. Tubers I think you could more easily go overboard. Processed grains are definitely off the list of healthy and in the "too high in carbs" region, especially in "serving" quantities.

Too much protein can have issues too. Protein metabolism is a messy process with many negative side products that have a net acidic load on the body etc. "Ketogenic", ketosis = bad. osteoporosis = bad (carbs also have a net acidic load on body too by the way).

I'm not so sure if you could consume too much EFA fat at natural ratios, although definitely a person can consume too much hydrogenated/trans, vegetable, or omega 6 but not enough 3.

Dean,

I'm under the impression, based on what I've read, about 3/4 of a gram of protein per pound of one's body weight is about right. More if you lift weights. That's not easy to do, however, considering a can of tuna, 2 chicken half breasts, 5oz. of steak & 5 whole eggs, each only fall in the 30-35 grams of protein range.

Additionally is it is also essential one consume adequate amounts of water.... at least 64 oz daily.

Hi Joe: This is too big to tackle at one go, as you say. Suffice to say, I've seen it up close and been exposed to a large amount of information on AD, but it is my lady who is fairly authoritative where I am not. She is still connected to an Alzheimer's Support Group after her mother died of it seven years ago. For those 5years of the duration of the disease and ever since, she has immersed herself in a lot of literature, especially via the Alzheimer's Society (which is well connected to all the global research, I gather.)

It must be emphasised that no link has been found between 'normal' ageing of the brain and Alzheimer's. This is where many people make an error of conflation. When one loses one's car keys, the joke is "Oh, must be your dementia or Alzheimer's!". First, it very, very rarely is (one in 83, I think); second, AD is no joke.

The prevention and "inevitablity" of 'normal' brain ageing may well have nutritional aspects, the little I know.

However, nutrition, life style etc. has not been found to correlate with AD. My lady's mother was an active, fit, healthy - and mentally active- woman. The study and research you'd understand better than me, but it has been exhaustive and hugely financed, with so far only a few hopeful possibilities unearthed. As of now, the diagnosis is the prognosis.

There's so much unknown yet.

Agreed.

The evidence now suggests, as documented in "Grain Brain" & other recent studies, excessive carbs, especially the refined type, do cook the brain. Carb intake, about 60 grams a day, obtained from low glycemic organic fruit & vegetables should be our limit.

Las Vegas Joe,

Just reading a selection of FAQ questions, it appears to me that the "Grain Brain" diet by Dr. Perlmutter is a very close approximation to the paleo diet.

- Both suggest to eat "above ground" vegetation: fruits and vegetables

- Both suggest to eat wild-fed meats, for their Essential Fatty Acid profiles and other nutritional qualities.

- Both suggest against eating tubers (potatoes especially, and sweet potatoes too)

- Both suggest to limit most kinds of seed consumption due to their carb and lectin content (seeds include grains, rice, legumes (beans & peas (peanut is a legume)))

Paleo suggests only drinking water. I'd guess that "Grain Brain" would do the same.

It seems that both systems of thought are classifying pretty much the same sets of foods as beneficial & harmful.

Then paleo gets into more individual specific problems with nightshades and milk products...

The "Paleo" diet doesn't have an official spokesman, its kind of a distributed nutritional development with various leading spokesman.

Here is a pretty awesome introduction to the "paleo diet" sphere: http://www.paleodiet.com/definition.htm

Here is Mark's Daily Apple (one of my favorite paleo spokesman), and his "The Definitive Guide to the Primal Eating Plan": http://www.marksdailyapple.com/definitive-guide-to-the-primal-eating-plan/

Oh yea, and if you are looking for people in real life who follow the paleo diet, your best bet is to stop by your local cross fit gym. Although they focus more on exercise given that they are a gym, their official diet recommendation is paleo. So the owners, workers, and maybe some of the customers will have all sorts of thoughts on how to eat paleo / find paleo foods for a good price.

Cheers,

Dean
