^^^^This one is called: Ayn Rand: The Sociopathic "Heart" of the Teabaggers. Charming.

^^^^This one is a real charmer called: Ayn Rand Admired Serial Killer William Hickman. It is from the Maoist Rebel News.

Now these guys, they know the difference between admiration of a serial killer to create a character concept and following and emulating a mass murderer.

^^^^His buddy made a longer one: called Ayn Rand Sucks.

You can't fool these boys!

^^^^This one is called: Christopher Hitchens Destroys the Cult of Ayn Rand. It does have a good Lillian Hellman story in the 3 minute clip.

http://youtu.be/hjkEZupzxGg

^^^^This young man is about 16 or 17 and his is entitled: Objectivism is stupid and Ayn Rand sucks.

There are some message boards where one can't even mention the name "Ayn Rand" without several posters foaming at the mouth and launching into attacks.

Ayn Rand could be very harsh in her condemnation of people she disagreed with, so maybe it's to be expected. It's not worth getting worked up about.

Mark:

Welcome back to OL.

No one is getting worked up about it. I have seen this type of visceral hatred for almost five (5) decades.

I had my thesis adviser in 1967 attempt to deny approval of my thesis which was An Aristotelian Rhetorical Analysis of the Objectivist Movement. He was a rabid marxist and behavioralist.

I am just illustrating the existence of the hatred in the newer media for anyone's interest.

I find it fascinating the rabid extent to which folks will go to attack Ayn's ideas.

I haven't forgotten my first rebuff on innocently mentioning Ayn Rand in 'intellectual' company over 30 years ago.

It was shocking and painful, seeing as I had respect for their opinions then.

I've lost some of the innocence, but haven't stopped - umm -'empathically' trying to see Rand and Objectivism through other people's eyes.

My overriding conclusion: truth hurts.

I have to agree with Adam; the sheer extent of the venom directed towards Rand and her ideas is so disproportionate that its quite telling.

I experienced it at TV Tropes, but in my actual academic career I didn't have too many problems... economics is generally friendlier to market-oriented ideas and I managed to get my Thesis advisor into Objectivism... the work he was doing had so many similarities I couldn't resist. My thesis dealt extensively with Objectivism and no one had a problem.

That said, some of the utter loathing I've experienced has been utterly obscene and, indeed, truly telling.

What is even worse than the sheer extent of the hatred is how people will deliberately and knowingly distort Objectivism in order to make others hate it. This is the most telling part; they are afraid of the truth.

This column , sent in by a reader of the wausaudailyherald.com, actually does have an interesting argument here:

Rand's philosophy places responsibility for success or failure in life squarely with the individual. Each person is responsible to work for their own self interest. Her heroes are "self-made" successful economic competitors. One may ask, what does "self-made" mean in modern economy. Successful people in
capitalist countries
are those who are skilled in manipulating the public infrastructure to their profit. They utilize public transportation facilities, public communications, educational and security systems as a base upon which to grow and maintain their business. Successful businesses have a tremendous public investment component. Business "success," touted by Ayn Rand, means growth of private wealth and power by individuals, regardless of the effect on other people and the environment.

I highlighted in blue a phrase which he does not define, nor would "O," or, "o" "jectivists," even posit exists anymore in today's world.

full column here

The rest of his column is replete with either, incorrect statements or highly charged emotional writing which is not Rand at all.

I just quickly scanned through some of the replies to this article and they are quite revealing, both in their approaches and their complete lack of knowledge of Rand, her life and her views.
