A Giant Robotic Ayn Rand?

Heh.

:)

I like animation and got a couple of small little beginner programs to futz with it, but I haven't learned them yet: Poser Debut and CrazyTalk 7 (not affiliate links).

These things often come out on sale and you can get them for a little of nothing. But even at list price, they are pretty cheap. And YouTube has a ton of tutorials.

I often wish I had more time, but I know me. I will get around to these things eventually.

Poser12 is a very good 3D application where you can build a scene using 3d modeled props, add/create lighting as simple or as complex as you need to. And use poser models. A 3d model that is fully rigged and morphable so you can position/pose it change length of body parts etc. create or use commercially available or free use skin textures that are UV mapped for that character. The texture is like a baseball's skin that wraps seamlessly around that model. An artform/skillset all on its own as a crappy texture WILL show where the seams are so one has to be VERY good at photoshop to do this. Most users are not so they buy them by 3rd party vendors.

You can also use poser for animation but there are better programs for that. Most of the movie companies are using Zbrush for model creation and maya for the animation as well as renderman.

Cinema4d is a very good alternative to 3dmax as a modeler program, it also has very good animation capabilities and very very good specular and volumetric lighting. Also it is bundled with texturing software that allows you to "paint" directly into your model with multibrushes that combine base colors and 3d textures like hair/fur as well as you can get particle plug ins so that in 3d animations not only can you simulate your objects hair/fur/clothing being moved by wind, you could also add rain/wind/leaves or flying moralists if you liked.

Zbrush? About the most incredible 3d character/object modeler out there.

If you watched Avatar ALL of the creatures/characters were modeled in zbrush.

Zbrush is THE SHIT and is only limited by your own skill. There is nothing that cannot be modeled in the most incredible detail with that program. It is created by pixelogic
