“The Equalizer”

Recommended Posts

I will try not to give out any spoilers. I just saw "The Equalizer" on Netflix starring Denzel Washington and it is in the same ballpark as some other films (in the same genre which I will not name so as to not be a spoiler) and those films are "Death Wish," "Ben Hur," and "Gladiator." It received a "fresh" rating on the movie rating site, Rotten Tomatoes. And that is all I have to say about that.

I have to assume the title doesn't reference a 19th century Colt revolver or modern equivalent.

unlikely to see the movie but eventually I'll read about it in a review (last movie I saw in a theater was War of the Worlds and that multiplex has since gone out of business for lack of business)

That is odd. I wrote a response to two letters posted on this thread but now it is missing. I don't feel like recreating it but I mentioned that a viewer or reader must be able to suspend their disbelief as Edgar Allen Poe mentioned. Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher was OK but Reacher is supposed to be a six foot five bad ass and Cruise is a small man.

The newest Bond films are more realistic. Remember ODD JOB in Goldfinger and Bond being chained to a cart with a time bomb in it? An expert gets to the timer before it blows and the numbered seconds left are 007.

I thought Denzel was believable and I liked the close up, slowed down image of the Equalizer calculating what he will do and how much time he has for each action. I thought a fit, ex-CIA guy like him COULD do much of what was done though the character appeared to be around 50 years old.

though the character appeared to be around 50 years old.

And appeared to be doing no active practice sense retiring

I watched it twice this weekend and since anything Denzel appears in I love, I gave it a fair shot.

It was much better than I expected.

The filming style is not one of my favorites, however, the almost surreal and slow motion segments were okay.

All in all, worth watching and add an extra star if you are a Denzel fan like I am.

If you like "revenge flicks" see "John Wick" with Keano Reeves. Fantastic body count. Wick's enemy is a Russian Mafioso also.

I am sure you meant to say a Russian Organized Crime Boss because I did not see any Italians in his posse.

John Wick was monotonous. If you are in combat you will not get so many chances to survive as was Keanu in that movie. It was easy to tune it out and read a book after the 155th killing.

The killing was as comic in its excess as was "Commando" with Ahnaldt Schwartzernegger.

I just watched the movie again on FX and my verdict stands. It was excellent. The Russian mafia makes The Sopronos mafia look like half way decent sorts.
