Now We're Talking... Grumpy, too...

Get a load of the following.

After that ominous experiment by Stanley Milgram where good people were willing to shock others to death because they were just following orders (not quite that simple, but you can read about it here), another experiment has shown that do-gooder happy sociable folks were more likely to be the ones to follow the orders of an authority and shock strangers to death than grumpy people who stick to their guns.

Psychologists Have Uncovered a Troubling Feature of People Who Seem Nice All the Time

People who were normally friendly followed orders because they didn't want to upset others, while those who were described as unfriendly stuck up for themselves.

"The irony is that a personality disposition normally seen as antisocial — disagreeableness — may actually be linked to 'pro-social' behavior,'" writes Psychology Today's Kenneth Worthy. "This connection seems to arise from a willingness to sacrifice one's popularity a bit to act in a moral and just way toward other people, animals or the environment at large. Popularity, in the end, may be more a sign of social graces and perhaps a desire to fit in than any kind of moral superiority."

Up to here, OK.

But the article also said this:

The study also found that people holding left-wing political views were less willing to hurt others. One particular group held steady and refused destructive orders: "women who had previously participated in rebellious political activism such as strikes or occupying a factory."

Heh.

It was probably left-wing money that funded this study. Either that, or the military and secret police of all those bloody left-wing dictatorships who tortured, slaughtered and imprisoned millions of innocent people were right-wingers.

How's that for massaging an experiment and findings?

Ah me, the bullshit never stops...

Let me be clear. I applaud those left-wingers in the experiment who resisted hurting others for their morality, but I seriously doubt their mentality was the same as the populations of the left-wing countries where the atrocities were carried out. Well, I can see them in the underground working to overthrow the regime. But not in the military or secret police or even the normal people who gave a blind eye.

I don't want to throw this thing out, though. Maybe we need a few more grumpy left-wingers and not so many socially-engineered "nudges" for Everyperson be friendly and happily altruistic and comply with Big Brother.
